GFC, we think a lot alike- I was just gonna post that. cpLinks is pretty good- some downfalls though:

difficult moving links between categories
cannot have sub-sub categories (like, Sports > Soccer > Shopping)

It does have a couple short comings, but it's free so what the heck. For a basic directory it gets the job done.

sub-sub catagories would be a very nice feature.

I will add that even though the script is free, the developers have always been very responsive to my questions.

Thanks everyone!

http://www.biz-directory.org/directory_script.php

I heared that this site had a back door where the designers could actually edit / view the database - that has put me off a little.

I'll check them all out and see which is the best one - subcategories aren't a problem because it'll only be one level category directory.

Actually the programmer removed the backdoor in the latest version (more...) (http://www.v7n.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13242)
I'm running the free version of it here (http://www.paidwebhosting.com/webmaster-portal/). It is using the standard template still but you can change the design pretty easy, I just didn't find the time to modify it yet. The directory script itself is running absolutely stable as well.

Javier put that small code in the script to ensure that no one steals the software, and I don`t think he did it to hurt anyone, but now since he has removed it.. the script is really good.

Most of the suggestions are PHP based so I will suggest an ASP directory script:

www.duware.com

They have free version and paid version but its almost the same except additional add-ons.

I do like this one a lot. I am actually learning asp now, but don't think it's the best way to go for a directory, php is King, bro!

onlinemarketingtoday.com has a pretty nice script. And it's free (does require 3-4 backlinks though).

Biz directory(http://www.biz-directory.org/directory_script_full.php) spiders real nice and is fast - excellent qualities. But the online admin demo look terrible, especially for $700. Darn few accomidations for human visitors too.

Why not grab an asp one and add a url rewriter (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnaspp/html/urlrewriting.asp). that way you have total control over the URLs and you don't have to worry about moding the original code. On the linke above is an MSDN example (C#.net but I integrated it into a vb.net app) that I was able to get working in a couple hours for my site.

WSN and Linker and Biz Dir are all good. Try K-Links as well, that is also kind of ok. It really depends on each person's requirements, that which ones suits best.

How many people are using the biz directory today ? and how many of them are the 4700 users with a lot of modifications ?

Hmm... anyone reckon it'd be worth making my directory (http://fastpaths.com) script available in some form? I like to think it's kinda original in terms of presentation at least (though it's very much yahoo inspired), and it is written from scratch, but not sure how much interest there'd be and if it's worth the time...

anyone reckon it'd be worth making my directory (http://fastpaths.com/) script available in some form? Definitely worth sharing.

I'd love to try and set up a (small danish) directory of sorts. I got a couple of niches in mind.

Wouldn't mind trying out yours as it looks good. I take it for granted that you won't mind me changing appearances?

If I release it I'll probably make it shareware. It'd definitely be ok to customise it. :)

Will probably have a look at tightening the code up a bit more sometime this week. No time guarantees though, really busy with work at the moment :)

I would definately try it.

Be sure to make it mandatory that it can be customized as much as they like but a link to you has to remain.

It can be a great way to build link popularity and those benefiting from the free script will be happy to support the author.

When you say SEO friendly, do you mean it's easy to optimize, or that the links added are search engine friendly?

I've been experimenting with this Linker script. While I like some aspects of it, I'm not so sure about whether the links would be considered true backlinks by the search engines. I want to give submitted URLs a SE friendly link.

For example, when a link is added, the address is like:

http://www.directoryname.com/Directory/jump.php?sid=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedsitename.com

Even though the www link is included at the end of the string, can it really be considered search engine friendly?

If this isn't SE friendly, I'll get a different script. Can anyone advise?

Well here is good ASP.NET one....
http://www.umailcampaign.com/DirectoryScript.aspx

Look at two examples of site done by their directory script.

Pretty cool. I like it a lot(because it is my own script.)

Most of the scripts mentioned in this thread needs customization to fit ones special requirements. The best option IMO would be to search hotscripts.com for simple managable scripts and then upgrade them according to the need .

Anyone know how to customize this Linker directory script so that it will be more SEO friendly?

http://enproject.codelib.co.kr/

ie.
http://www.domain.com/index.php?cat=1
changed to..
http://www.domain.com/cars/
or..
http://www.domain.com/cars.html

I've seen directories customized this way but have no idea how this is done.

Bos Directory is a free SE-friendly script with a small cost for removing the footer credit. Worth considering - I use it on a few niche directories: http://www.bosdev.com

There are two ways to do it:
1.Mod_rewrite Module:Write a .htaccess file and place it at root directory,it will transform static-link url to dyn url
For example,
http://yabsoft.info/demo/yablinksdemo

2.If your site has high traffic, some script support generate statis pages.

[example link deleted because I'm new and the system won't allow links in my post :) ]

That's NOT SEO-friendly, and I'm also hoping to see an answer to this. A lot of scripts do this, and I think the way around it involves htaccess, but I can't seem to find any tips on just what to put in the file.

To me, SEO-friendly means static links for your pages, and non-scripted links for your link partners.

I think it probably just requires two bits of code added into htaccess - one to convert dynamic links, and another to deactivate the scripting. Does anyone know what needs to be put on there? If there was a simple solution to this, that would make a WHOLE lot of the scripts out there tweakable to SEO-friendliness.

There's a simple mod_rewrite feature in Bosdev, though the URLs aren't keyworded, in case that's an issue.
