Reg'ed in 2002 for a 4 year period, obviously has very well/cleanly written code, a good amount of backlinks... but PR 8 just seems very high...

Not suprised :D . They have over 10,300 (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=link%3Awww.simplebits.com%2F) backlinks in google. Some of those linked pages may have have very high PR.

Google shows that 10k links, but I tried to find theme in source codes, and I couldn't see any. (I looked 4 sites appearing in google link results, and also looked at the cache version)

If google is showing 10K BLs then there are probably several thousand more that GG isnt showing you. Google usually only shows some back links, not all.

As far as I know they were featured in several design award sites like CSSBeauty, CSSVault, etc (maybe even several times) and most of those have high PR themselves...

Here are some stats:

Back Links
Google: 10,300
Yahoo!: 132,000
MSN: 171,702

Look at the PR of the top sites that give BLs according to Yahoo! (http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=link%3ahttp%3a//www.simplebits.com&ei=UTF-8&n=20&fl=0&fr=fp-tab-web-t&dups=1) (the top 4 sites have PR8s).
