Is it any worse to have an image or banner linking to my site rather than having a link? Will this still count towards my PR, backlinks etc.?

Thanks

It's not worse, no. An image link is still a link and certainly counts toward PR & backlinks just the same as a text link would.

Make sure there's alt text included. Since there's no link text in an image link, alt text is a useful alternative. For example:

<a href="http://www.example.com"><img src="/pathtoyourimage/image.jpg" alt="put what you'd usually use as link text here"></a>

even if you use the alt tag, for the serps, a text link with more text around it should be better

but for PR/backlinks there should be no dif

it's not bad.

links with images and links with anchor text will be counted as backlinks

Exactly, the only difference is in the relevance weight of the link.

And anchor text of a textlink tends to get more relevance "points" then the ALT text of an image link.
