Interested to know how important a link (or links) from stumbleupon is in terms of
a) general traffic
b) seo.

These links have nofollow attributes. So in terms of SEO they are quite useless. Traffic is good though.

Yea it only effects traffic numbers, but this traffic can lead to other oppurtunities.

Traffic can be great. There's no direct SEO effect but you can get picked up by other sites, which leads to a secondary SEO improvement.

My impression is that its value is primarily one of exposure. That is, you don't gain direct SEO benefits but as renec states, others may pick to write about you. It may also be an opportunity to pick up some new readership, subscribers, etc.

stumble will help your traffic.
it will not help your seo because link on stumble have nofollow

Hahaha.
Unfortunately StumbleUpon applies the rel="nofollow" attribute to external links. As a result you'll get some nice traffic which may result in viral expansion, but you will not get any benefits in terms of SEO.
There we go.
I would encourage other people also to rephrase this as I don't feel it has received the attention it should.

Because of their "no follow" links
But they can make your site go spastic
With an excessive amount of traffic
