Does anyone know of a good application that can help with download of audio files, software, etc. Basically we're looking for something that both will show the status of the download and allow the download to be resumed if it is stopped for some reason. My guess is that this is something that can be programmed but if there is an off-the-shelf/open-source app that would do this that would be money. Any suggestions?

Did you try search on search engines?
If not, go to google.com, for example, in search box enter "download manager". And, after a second list of links to d/l managers be in front of you.
I know Flash Get, Get Right.

I think I did a poor job of phrasing my question... :)
We're hosting the files and visitors to our website will be downloading them. I'm looking for some sort of application that we can provide to them to help them monitor the download and help with acceleration or resuming a stalled download. I'm not sure if what I am asking for even exists. If it's software they have to install it probably won't work (I don't think we'll get a very high adoption rate). I guess I'm thinking along the lines of like when you download an update from Microsoft how you'll see a status bar that tells you where you are in the download process. If we could provide something similar to our users that would be swell.
