I was going to submit my site to the Yahoo directory but it said there was a charge of $299.
Is there a free way to get into the directory or do you have to pay

Hello,
I know long time ago, they submited some website for free, and they could take time to submit a website for free. If you have a very nice site, high traffic, etc etc maybe they could add your site for free VERY RARE, but if you want to review your site in one week they charge 299.
They dont guarantee to submit your site if you pay 299 :)
Best,
Jakomo

mmm depend.. it is around $25 per month, if you are accepted of course. If you have a good site, and you know that you will do money, $25 its ok, becouse be in Yahoo will help you in Google serp, Yahoo serp, etc and you will get some traffic directly from Yahoo directory.
My 2 cents,
Jakomo

If you have a quality site, it's worth the money.

Be approved with free submission is possible only with very small probability. It is something like be in DMOZ.

Plus, I believe, if they don't accept you after paying $299, kiss it goodbye.

Save your money, submit to Yahoo Directory for free. Then, submit to DMOZ Directory for free (always free) and you might have better luck there.

I agree with Jakomo. If it is a good site and you can afford it I would think it would help you a lot in the SERPs which should payoff in additional traffic.
Good luck!

You don't have to pay $299, but you will have to wait a long time and it is not guaranteed

Will google count that listing as backlink from PR8?

No. It won't count it as link from PR8.

keep in mind, that's $299 a YEAR, it's not a one time fee. I do have to say, it helps a lot.
LOL @ dmoz. Your chances of getting hit by lightning are better than getting listed on dmoz...

I think I'll wait until I'm a bit more established

I submitted my site to Yahoo when it was still fairly young, but without
the advertising that's on it now, and got in for free. If it's fairly non-
commercial, with good content, chances are you'll get in. Even if
you pay, there's no guarantee your site will get in.
