Image and Video Extraction - How to do it?

I've seen sites such as Google Images and Altavista where you can view thumbnails of images/videos online. How did they do this? Of course I will need to code something, but does anyone know of any good software that is out there that can do it already?

Just to explain further, I'm looking for code which will allow me to do something like these sites:

Can anyone point me in the right direction I checked out Sourceforge and Freshmeat with no luck!

Hi liwei, the only thing I can think of that may be of some help is Dreamweaver's Commands>create web photo album - you'd have to screengrab all your vids to start with and then modify the result of this operation. There *must* be a better way but I don't have that knowledge HTH
