Paypal is great, but I have been hearing some bad stories about it lately. Well, it's been going on for a long time, I just hadn't read about it. I love Paypal, and it is my favorite payment processor, but I don't know what to make of this site:
http://www.paypalsucks.com
It kind of scared me, but the things on that site might be lies. I'm not sure, but it never hurts to be too careful

Heard about it, haven't been affected by it.
Happy that it is there
Especially when you can buy stuff online, register domains and the like with it. No need to pull out credit card.

I haven't had any problems despite pretty regular use. It would be nice if Paypal had a viable competitor though...

Most of the stories I have heard are from shady deals people are in. Fraud is a real problem, why should paypal be liable if you or the other party pull the money back?
Just be carefull with you associates and there should really be limited issues. I have been with Paypal for 5 years not and have never had an issue with them.

No problems after 500 plus transactions. You can't make everyone happy all the time, and only a few upset people can make alot of noise.

I have had problems with paypal. I signed up with a listing service and the service got regisered twice. now I didn't have enough in my paypal so they took the money from my checing account and caused me to loose about 200 in bounced check fees. I cleared it with the listing service but this cost me in end about 400. I have since learned my lesson. I started a special checking account for paypan and as soon as verified I drop the account. now they have recourse if this should happen again. I recomend this for all using paypal. if you should need to reverifie just open another account and do it again. I have herd many horror stories from owners of sites I design about them getting screwed to. So I would put validity in the site paypalsucks.com. and the bears suck too.!!!

I agree - many of the stories I've heard or read where people were supposedly "burned" by PayPal left me scratching my head saying - "Well, no wonder! You were running a scam". A lot of folks walk a very fine line - especially in regard to *adult* type products.
Statistically, a few monkeys out of a few jillion are pretty good odds that you won't have a problem.:)

Love Paypal. Merchant side, their anti-fraud hands down beats any MC/Visa/Amex/Discover processing service.
Paypal goes further then, "have the card holder's signiture acknowledging they bought the item?". Any of the other services, if you do not have the card holder's signiture, your only recourse is to charge up processing and paper fees and drop them into collections, small claims or both. Even that won't garantee you will get your money.
Long story short, Paypal has saved me from being robbed probably around 800 - 1200 dollars.
Easiest way to commit theft is to purchase online with a visa or mastercard followed by reporting a fraudalant charge after you receive your bill and *notice* something wrong. If the order comes with signiture confirmation sign another name other than your own or have someone else sign for it. If that company doesn't have the name that's on the card you paid with, that merchant is fucked.
With Amex, you can file fraud several months after the incident. So if you think the money is in the bank, its questionable.
Needless to say, want to be pissed at someone, be pissed at MC, Visa, Amex and Discover. Be pissed at any bank advertisement which glorifies reporting fraudulant charges to get their money back. People are rediculous and think its an acceptable method of getting a refund.
I'm sure there have been ligitimate people who have been burned by Paypal just as there have been questionable people. Those cases were probably cases which they couldn't provide evidence of delivering the product/service to the customer when a chargeback was initiated.

There was this company, Greenzap, that popped up, and said they were going to be Paypal's real competitor. They are idiots. They have something called "WebCash" which is literally completely worthless. And then they say people will be able to pay mortgages and student loans with WebCash. It's so stupid...

Paypal is okay but I did get burned bad 3 years ago. I sold a customer in california 3 pallets of New Overstock merchandise for $499.00 pallet shipped.. I had the shipment arranged out of Texas.. The customer recieved the pallets and 2 weeks later contacted me to see if I would buy them back because he ran into some financial problems. I told him I could not do that.. He contacted paypal and they put a hold on the $400.00 I currently had in my account.. They locked my account and put it in dispute. He claimed he never recieved it.. I sent Paypal the bill of lading from the trucking company and there reply is We need a UPS Tracking number.. Well obviously I do not have UPS tracking number if I did not ship it UPS.. They would not accept the trucking bill of lading.. Needless to say to this day I cannot open a Paypal account until I pay them the remainder of the $1500.00. The customer got his money back from paypal and got to keep the product.. I refuse to pay them even though I did not read the fine print it is a matter of principal..

I've had very bad times with Paypal.
My latest was probably a few months ago when I realised that something I had been selling had stopped working (I won't get into the technical stuff), but I was sending out my refunds, and once I sent out 50 refunds, my account was limited. I wasn't able to send, accept, or even refund money to people.
I run several things through my Paypal. Infact, Paypal is the only way I get money sadly. I pay hosting fees, I run friends websites, and I'm always paying a web designer for something or other. When they told me that my account would be limited for at least 2 weeks I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Those were probably the worse 2 weeks of this year. I couldn't do anything and had to explain to about 100 people I couldn't send them money because I sent 50 refunds within 48 hours, which according to Paypal is 'Suspicious Behaviour' - if you ask me, surely sending refunds is anything but suspicious?
Either way, Paypal sucks but we're stuck with it for now. Has anyone tried to send an email to their support? You click through 2938 menus, then you spend a while typing out an email. You wait about 8 days for a reply, which is a template, the only thing which has changed is the support persons name. All they do is offer you a selection of links, and then ask if they can help you further, you email them again and they do exactly the same thing after another 6 days. It's bloody hopeless. Bring on Google Wallet!

one time, i was on the phone with customer support, they wouldnt release money to me because i did not have a cable or phone bill with my name on it with my current addy. the drivers license photocopy and S.S. photo copy wasnt good enough. the lady on the phone told me i was a liar, she called me a "LIAR", because i didnt have proof of my addy on a fucking phonebill or cable bill.. im sorry but thats unacceptable. i actually had to get the cable switched into my name to get my money from paypal, OH MY.
sorry i couldnt resist atleast one of my stories. plus this situation involved over 5 phone calls over a two week period.

Love paypal, never really had any problems at all, been using them for years. I have heard a few people say they had their account closed down, then It comes out they were doing something against the TOS of paypal, so its no wonder they were shut down.
Selling adult products or Running 2tier+ affiliate programs is a quick way to get shutdown using paypal.
my paypal is open and in working order, i also use it ALOT. i only use it because they are the only real choice. =\

scenario 1
User1 sends $100 to user2 via paypal.
User1 then does a charge back or used funds from another fraud transaction.
The accounts for all parties involved are frozen until they can track the issues
User2 comes on here, stating paypal sucks because they where nice enough to notice there was some fraud and are taking the time to look into it!
If you dont want to get in this situation, stop trading e-gold and doing business with low end ebay'rs. Remember if you go to a bank with a client's check and they have non sufficient funds NFS, the bank wont cash it. There is no difference here.

This should not turn ugly guys. No need to insult one anothers sites.
If you've been burned by PayPal then it makes sense to feel animosity towards them unless of course ServerUnion's point (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=480233&postcount=31) applies.
It's all circumstance and each case is different. Whether they suck or not, I don't know.
I can say this. I've been a member for 2 years and have had no problems but I can't wait for another solution (Google Wallet) as I'd leave them in a heartbeat, I just don't trust them but it's my only solution at this time. So yes, I've had a positive experience but have heard too many horror stories to trust them, especially with access to my bank account, but it's a risk we take.
Now, stop the petty "your site is worse than mine" crap, there's enough turmoil in this world. ;)

Stop it with the PayPal BS
The duration you've been with Paypal doesn't really matter. I could be with them for 20 years, not have a single transaction and think that they're great. If you deal with many hundreds of transactions every week, and you rely upon them as a service, and they suddenly stop you from doing business for several weeks for no reason, I should think you would quickly change your thoughts about them.
You're correct by saying that Paypal is now owned by eBay. But by saying that there's going to be problems because it's a big organisation is a whacked logic. What kind of mentality is that? You're saying we should expect non-existant customer service from a company because it's run by a big organisation? If anything, the bigger the company, the better the customer service I expect due to the financial resources available. I deal with many large companies, Google, Amazon, Play ect, and I don't have problems with their customer services.
I think you should think before you type. There's plenty of companies who have gone out of business due to Paypal. You ask people to back up their statements on why we feel Paypal sucks. Here's your answer:
Read my original post on Page 2 for what happened to me, I explained what happened to a Paypal phone support person, they cut me off, I reconnected after calling for 20 minutes, I asked to go back to the original person, they said that they couldn't do that for me, I had to explain it all over again, then they put me on hold for over 40 minutes (good thing I have a free phone line), then I got cut off again. I phoned again the next day, explained the whole story again, and they said I needed to fax through my details. I did this, waited the 48 hours, they said they never received it. I sent it again 3 times, and even sent one to a friend to make sure it was working. Waited another 48 hours, phoned up again, and guess what? They hadn't received it. All the while I was sending emails to them like mad, and only getting templates sent back to me. That's exactly why Paypal sucks. At the end of the day, they're dealing with peoples money, they should act like it.
For the record, Paypal have been found guilty in court, for ignoring customer complaints and deleting customer emails.

Why not step up with the big boys and get a mwechant account.
In business we take risks, we must accept the drawbacks of these risks. If you car breaks down and you get fired for not not going to work, do you blame the service station? I personaly just ride the bus.
Paypal has millions of customers, at a 99% approval they are doing well at a customer service level. At 1 million customers they still have 10K unhappy customers. Internet based services seem to have a better way of letting these unhappy customers vent.
What about the other 99% that are happy?

In short, a summary is present on this page:
http://www.paypalsucks.com/PayPalPhoneNumbers.shtml
You should also know that PayPal's hiding of it's phone number and deleting customer's emails was one of the principle issues why they agreed to pay $9.1million dollars to settle the class auction lawsuit brought on EFTA (Electronic Funds Transfer Act) violations.
Why not step up with the big boys and get a mwechant account.

I have a merchant account which I use on sites where it's best suited. My target audience for most of my sites however, prefer to pay via Paypal for the following reasons:
They don't have Credit Cards
They aren't allowed to use parents Credit Cards due to fraud risk
They prefer to use Paypal because it's portrayed as being far safer than Credit Cards on the net
They're allowed to use parents Paypal because they feel it's alot safer to use compared to Credit Cards
They prefer Paypal because it's easier and faster than using Credit Cards
According to Paypal.com, they have 86.6 million accounts. Where did you get the 99% approval rating from? Paypal? The same company which which brags:
The PayPal Customer Service team is specially trained to address all account inquiries. Send us an email and we'll reply promptly.
Yet they were ordered to pay $9.1 million because, partly because they were deleting customer emails? I personally don't trust those facts. They're not brilliant, an 'approval' of a service isn't anything to brag about if you ask me.

wasn't doubting you, just wanted to see the entire article.
The numbers I picked were just an example. Many view a customer approval rating over 99% as good.
I agree also that a lot of industry sectors are best done with PayPal as the merchant. Although those sectors also seem to have a higher risk to them. This is the risk of doing business for many of us.

Ok, that's no problems :)
I honestly prefer the easy internet solution that Paypal offers. I'm also not totally innocent as I'm under 18, so I'm not allowed to have a Paypal account in the first place. Paypal have proved the virtual payment processing concept and invested heavily into marketing it - now it's time for Google (or another equally money clad company) to step up and beat them at it.

i agree, someone needs to step up ASAP and crush paypal, i think this would make everyone happy. paypal has been on top too long and they are cocky...
I've been using them for quite a while now, and have had no problems. They process all our transactions and when I've called with any issues I always get through and have always had someone solve my problem. They also follow up now to see if everything worked out. I'm guessing things have changed now that E-Bay has taken over, maybe if there were issues they've since been taken care of.
While I am happy with their service, now that our business is growing I'll definitely begin looking at merchant accounts, but only because PayPal's rates are a bit high for the volume we're beginning to do. They're great if you're starting out and need an easy solution, but long-term they make up for this simplicity by charging bigger fees with their free shopping cart feature.
