So it seems to me that the best way to get links is to come up with something creative, funny, interesting, or useful that will get you noticed and people will naturally link to you. Lo and behold that's what Google and everyone else want you to do anyway.
If people spent the same amount of effort conceiving a creative idea as they do on questionable SEO tactics, I wonder if they wouldn't have as good or better a result. And... the best part is, if you are building links the way you are "supposed to"... organically and naturally... then every Google algo update will only help you, assuming the boys (and girls) at Google know what they're doing.

Very true, very true.
I agree with what you are saying, this should be the key here. It is a shame that in order to keep a website competitive, or get one off the ground, that people must resort to these tactics. I think building you strategy around this is destined to fail - and companies are coming up with ways of getting around SEO (like digg, stumbleupon, etc. even though ppl abuse that too).

To get noticed you need to do something to get noticed. You can't just sit around and expect people to see your site if you don't do anything to get it noticed.
My advice, directory submission, social bookmarking, buy and exchange links.
Then you might notice some people coming to your site and possibly better ranks on the Search Engines.

Weput: why don't you comment on a few blogs, or mention someon elese blog on yours and trackback it? If you haven't done so already, you could look at mybloglog.
Use some of the social media sites like stumbleupon, digg etc and if it's relevant content people will look at it and maybe even link to it. Getting any new site off the ground is a pain, it just takes practice and if you can throw a bit of money at it, that will tend to speed it up

The best way to get indexed is to put ur website as ur signature in forums like DP and other good forums. It would also be a nice idea that u put ur website address as ur signature in blogs too.
Once the site has been indexed the more chances u have to beenfit from the links u exchange
good luck

It is true what they say 'content is king'.
Not just for SEO but also because others will link to your site.
