Hello,

You might get this weird but it is true.
I am on the first page on MSN for general web directory (http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=general+web+directory&go.x=0&go.y=0&form=QBRE) and for seo friendly general web directory (http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=SEO+Friendly+General+Web+Directory&go.x=0&go.y=0&form=QBRE) and despite that in the last month I got only 1 unique visitor on my directory.ipgp.net (http://directory.ipgp.net/).I just cannot believe it !

Having this in mind... I am wondering... how much share does MSN have ? is it so insignificant search engine ? Is it happening to you too ?

Yup - that's normal I would say. It simply tells you that SEO is just one component. If you optimise for the wrong search engine you can still end without business...

Not a lot of people use MSN so there is a lack of traffic.

and why do they keep and maintain it then ? :(

PS: to be sincere.. the first and last time I used MSN it was to search for my web directory on it to see the ranking situation... :D

I sometimes use MSN to make an image search.
The results are usually better than Google's.

Maybe if you shot for improving on the keyword of "directory" "web directory" "site directory" the simple words. If grabbed #1, you'd probably get 100's of uniques.

Those are pretty brutal keywords. Even ranking on the 1st page on Google for those keywords wouldn't do much for you.

MSN can give decent traffic if you pick up good rankings for more highly searched keywords and phrases.

dlm's right. Those aren't effective keywords to target. Sure, it's easier to get top rankings for obscure terms that aren't targetted by other websites, but you'll attract little traffic, if any. MSN holds almost 10 per cent of the overall search engine market share; that's nothing to sneeze at! Yahoo has about 24 per cent and Google about 50 per cent. Best to target all three, and some of the smaller ones if you're serious about SEO.

You should not worry to much about MSN. Google is the search engine where most of your traffic should come from. Besides not many people use MSN search.

I found out that my entertainment site gets some traffic from msn but my tecnical site don't get much although both of them ranks well.Generally tecnical searchers are conservative and stick what they are using, since your keywords are for webmasters this does not surprise me.

I have a pretty similar issue. I am ranked on the first page of MSN as well as Yahoo for some certain keywords, but traffic from them have been minimal. Looks like I'm not the only one.

question you need to ask is how many searched are performed for these keywords.

I found before live.com released msn.com or msn.co.uk used to send far more traffic!

MSN entertains new websites, but getting some quality traffic from it is difficult as most of the net users prefer google. of course, I get some traffic from and a few sales from msn. its not that bad.

i get a fair amount of traffic from msn, however, I think perhaps the keywords you've tergeted are the issue,

even on google, traffic volume for those would be very low

I'm getting more traffic from some very specific single (long tail) keywords on google than some very general keywords I rank well for on MSN.

Plus the google keywords are more targeted and likely to convert.

Ask seems to be bringing more traffic than MSN on some sites...

The people who search MSN are the people who got it on the new computer in my opinion and never changed there home page. So you have to think what would these people be searching for if you want traffic from them.

MSN has proven to be useless to me so your predicament doesn't really surprise me.

It just doesn't have the pull of say Google.

I think for your terms your not going to see many SEO people searching on MSN I would say most stick to google or so it seems. at least I do

the problem is with the keywords as seo related searches are generated by webmasters which obviously use google.
If you optimize for movies, games, etc, you ll see some trafic .

It might have good results but the volume is very small.

I ranked #1 for a very competitive term on MSN for awhile. MSN gave me next to nothing for traffic, i was very surprised.

I looked on overture keyword suggestion tool...that keyword is not even on the list so I'm assuming it gets less than 50 searches a month on google, let alone MSN. Make sure you use a keyword suggestion tool to see if the keyword gets traffic BEFORE you optimize that term. I wouldn't bother optimizing anything that gets less than 500 searches per month on overture (yahoo), but this will depend on the industry and other factors.
