Changing DMOZ Category

Okay here's the question. I inherited a web site that's classified in the google directory under

World > Deutsch > Online-Shops > Computer > Hardware

There's hundreds of stores in this category. Most of our business is in used notebooks, and I believe we'd be far better off in category

World > Deutsch > Online-Shops > Computer > Hardware->Gebraucht

(gebraucht=used)

where there's only six or seven others listed. I am also trying to get us higher in the serps for keyword "gebrauchte notebooks" and I surmise getting reclassified might help on this point as well.

I submitted a change request to dmoz over a month ago, but there's no change and no one seems to care. How do I figure out who is responsible for maintaining this directory? I have read many times that the dmoz classification is quite important for a variety of reasons, but there seems to be very little information on getting reclassified.

Can someone give me any pointers/links/contacts?

The best thing to do is submit a change (like you did). You can check the status of it at http://www.resource-zone.com/

Regrettably, as I know from bitter and continuing experience, however noble the intent of the ODP, change requests seem to uniformly be directed to a bit bucket.

I have just now submitted my third request in, I'd guess, six months, for certain simple changes, with zero result to date.

(Actually, considering how brief a listing is, I'd suppose all changes are--or should be--simple and minimal.)

I do think they have a shortage of editors: both the category I am in and the one I want to be in have no editor at present.

If the category has no editor, you probably will have to wait a long, long time unfortunately. What's the URL of the site in there right now? I could at least look up the notes on it for you.

The only note on it is that it was published (last June). But I think there would be a note if a change was rejected (because they would have to delete the request), so I'm thinking you are still in the queue...

It's a little frightening--maybe more than a little--that an organization of such importance and influence is run so. One would almost think they're part of the government.

The problem is it's all volunteers. And none (well except for a few) have other lives. :) Totally depends on the category. For example, my category never takes more than 24 hours for any addition, edit, etc. I log at least once a day.

I have submitted to DMOZ 5 times in two years and I still not listed a total joke of a directory.

Since you requested the change. I would recommend you stopping there. If the site gets removed you won't be able to get in again.

ROFL... seriously, this thread is from 2004. This is 2009. Their entire database went down somewhere in the middle of that timeframe. Really dont think the OP is standing by waiting for an answer now. :)

Well, there are probably people who submitted sites to DMOZ 5 years ago and are still waiting to get in because of lazy editors... There's so much trash still in DMOZ from 2004 and link rot anyways. I don't know why Google just won't drop them.

Err no. The huge majority of pending listing suggestions were lost in a systems crash in late 2006 - as Mr Jones pointed out above. Anybody who last suggested their site in 2006 or earlier might want to suggest it again now.

I thought most people here already knew this. It's been discussed enough times.
