You will love this story, this guy infects computer users boxes with spyware/adware, then he offers to remove it for $30.00.

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/computersecurity/2004-10-07-ftc-spyware_x.htm

What will they think of next?

Smoke these, get cancer and we will charge you 200 grand to try to cure you :D

The Russian Mafia uses fake anti-spyware sites to do drive by downloads of spyware.

Google is letting fake spyware companies buy Adwords also, this is a known fact.

Be careful when you see anyone advertisng spyware/adware software or even websites that make claims to be anti-spyware sites.

I had one computer that was being constantly infected with some spyware that kept advertising this spyware removal tool... can't remember the name. Antivirus software couldn't find nor remove it, but SP2 seems to have stopped it...

Oh well, they should really pass a law against this stuff, it's so much worse than spam.

Sanford Wallace has quite a "career/reputation" in the spam arena - despite saying he is "born again", I don't find it surprising that he is listed ...

They did pass a law, the user has to aggree to install the software....does not seem to have taken effect yet.

I'll see if I can find a link to the site that was talking about it.

I hate having to remove it from my little cousins computers. They are so innocent and they dont know what they are doing when they get something like new emoticons for msn, the spyware comes along.

Its that stupid 180 Search Assistant crap. I really wonder how much they make from ads.

Same here.. I'm usually on top of things, but a pop-up came up and I accidently hit "Yes" without thinking, and it literally destroyed my computer. Ironically, I clean spyware on a daily basis as part of my job (moron users who like to install junk), but my case was pretty bad.. Even after I cleaned everything up, the computer wasn't running right, and a reformat was the only option.

XP SP2 is great, it's really made it hard for things to get installed unnoticed anymore!

On a friends computer with win98, even after cleaning it would have errors in IE, etc... I had them download MS updates (on dialup, I wasn't going to wait) and after those were installed, they don't have the errors anymore. Most IE updates are to patch the holes.
