Link exchange sites - are they cause get penalized by google?

Hello Everyone,
Few weeks ago I started link building using a link exchanging site. I've exchanged some links (not more than 20) within few days via this site. This is a faster and easier process. But recently I noticed that my site losing its position horribly . It seems that it may got penalized by google for any reason.

Do you guys think that using link exchanging sites for exchanging links cause get penalized by google?:confused:

If you are exchanging links with some of those sites you will get penalized.

Better to saty away from them and concentrate on quality back links.

Hi I had exchanged my website link with one of pr-6 websites but later I realized there was an a*d-u#lt link on the website as hidden when I pressed ctrl+A I saw the link. Does it have any bed effect to my website to get back link from this website.
