i finally made #1 ranking in yahoo for a big keyword. I'm 1 out of 21,600,000. All the work might be paying off. I'm also #7 for another big keyword. Now hopefully google starts to recognize my site and ranks me for these same keywords

Google doesn't rank you on anything based on other search engine results. You need to make sure you have a high Pagerank and that you have a good enough high-keyword density.

What you need to rank high on Google for specific keywords is anchor text using that keyword placed on your sites and other peoples.

Other than basic onsite facts ,the above post is right. KWD plays little or no role in your ranking. Google is a simple factor of inbound links. The more and better ones you have the better you will rank.

If you are no.20 for anything then you might as well be no. 1,000,000 it does not help in traffic, first page or don't bother

You are mostly right on this but I think it also depends on what you are searching for. Sometimes, I'll go till the 5th page if the term doesn't produce enough quality results.

I agree, but it would have to be for a very specific keyword term that I go that far into search results. 9 times out of 10 I will just look on the first page.

they're still tunning this algo. I'm #1 in 27 out of the 32 yahoo sites. (31 international and main) so i'm guessing that either these are updated with the algo (because they show my current cached page) while the main yahoo site has me #3 and the page it has listed for my site is OLD.... so we'll see how things turn out.

Edit to add: And those dictionary defs have never been there before.

Not necessarily true, I have a decent amount of reciprocal relevant links and i still havn't received a ranking, therefore links help if you are already recognised substantially by google and yahoo , i am in yahoo but not google its all about the aging delay, based alledgedly on kws and their competitivness.

I agree. I am a newbie to SEO, but after optimizing our site for a competitive key word - and some rather obscure ones - we jumped from the 4th page of Google to the 1st and we haven't yet started a links campaign (although we had a reasonable number of backlinks to begin with).

Yahoo on the other hand(!) thats a different story. We initially shot up from the 11th page to the 6th and there we have stayed for 13 weeks. I don't understand how our site can be ranked highly by Google and not Yahoo :(

I personally like Yahoo! and to a certain extent MSN for their fast index inclusion and willingness to spider my sites on a regular basis. :)

I have also recently noticed significant jumps in my Keyword Ranks on Yahoo! for semi competitive terms (up to 6 mil ) and I'm liking it... I just wish more people would start using Yahoo instead of Google.

PS: Congrats to those of you who have #1 of XX,XXX,XXX that is pretty amazing!

Yahoo tends to be a lot like the old Google - much easier to optimize for. Keyword density, keywords in the URL (especially domain) tend to count for a lot in Yahoo.

I have to agree with this, Yahoo is showing 130000 links to my site and I think they all contain the same anchor text.

I wasn't ranking at all in Yahoo but when I upped the COOP weight to 60k pointing to my site with anchor text of three carefully selected words I am suddenly ranking at #1 for those keywords and on the first or second page for about 25 other terms containing a mixture of those keywords. And these are very popular terms, one has over 200million results.

I don't rank anywhere in Google for any of those terms but never have so I'm not worried about upsetting Google.

Sadly, this is mostly true. In a Penn State study of browser's behavior,
only 20% went on to the second page of results.

I could not find the original study in html, but here it is in pdf...

Click the second one down titled:

I've had statistics of my website, and google and MSN index me a thousands times per month, while Yahoo indexes me like 20 times per month and only the main page. I dunno i never really did their add URL thing, but when i look at search engine statistics most of my visitors come from Google, and a few come from MSN, 0 from yahoo. It's really quite odd.

I'm ranked #1 or on first page in about 20-40 keywords.
This month i got 400 first-time hits from Google, 20 from MSN.
So i'm really confused as to why Yahoo doesn't rank me at all.

This is out of 1332 records. (All of which are MSN and Google):
This is Selecting Slurp! bots only:

/articles.htm
/
/codedb.htm
/index.php
/tutorials.htm
/
/index.php
/
/index.php
/
/
/
/
/

And it goes on like that for exactly 29 records. Doesn't crawl anything except a few pages. I submitted my site to Yahoo today, and also to the directory. My website is mainly content based but i do offer a service of web design if needed. But hopefully they won't reject it, and say it is non-commercial. I dont want to pay 299$ :X

You can use digital point's keyword suggestion tool. Keep in mind that high competition search terms don't only show lots of results but they will have many sponsored links in adwords or overture. ;)

I had 17 out of over 1,350,000,000 (it might still be there) - no real seo attempts (old site, old links) though it was purely trophy, even though in theory its a great term to rank for.
