unless you are an official university, I don't think that you will have much (any) luck registering a .EDU domain.

One of the reasons .edu domain names are valuable for backlinks is because they are automatically picked up by many other sites with good PR. With little outbound links they tend to build a good repository of quality inbound links which adds value to the site. This translates to an even bigger value if your site is lnked from a .edu domain. Honestly, I dont think you buying a .edu domain will add any value to your site.
