Not that it need much explaining but is there anywhere that explains how the reputation system here works? I can't seem to find a FAQ or help page.

red you bad, green you good. A good way to get red is to start a thread like this or express any political oppinion.

Thanks for your help, guys. Aaron's link gave me a brief idea (if not of "reputation" itself at least an appreciation that one's ability to award points to others rises in a number of different ways).

A good way to get red is to start a thread like this

I obviously don't understand the system, then. Asking for help typically annoys people enough for them to give you "red"? And why should I care if I get "red"? Even if it happens repeatedly?

I'm surprised that nobody ever considered this an important enough subject to be covered properly in the FAQ. This being, appropriately, the Suggestions and Feedback section, I suggest a comprehensive explanation of the reputation system (or a link to where it's already covered)

It was a valid question and not one whining about "why did I get a red?"... I agree, if it's not in the faq, it should be.

It's kind of like an online popularity thing. You see people with a lot of green and it's like hey looks it's the funny guy or the helpful guy, but overall not really important. It's funny though for something being so unimportant people love to whine about it.

Sometimes people don't like to do business as eagerly with someone who is in the red, because sometimes people get red from the buy, sell, trade forum because they might not end an auction when they should, etc.

The reason why people sometimes red rep people for asking about rep is because it gets asked a lot. Actually people complain about it alot and anytime someone sees a a thread about it they automatically get ready to red rep someone.

If you look around a little bit you'll see there are a lot of threads asking about rep so that's why they said you're lucky if you don't get repped for that. There probably should be some easy all inclusive FAQ though.

I hope that helps.

Warning some of the above my not make much sense because my girlfriend asked me about 100 questions in the middle of writing this.

she said "did you almost see me fall".

Me"25 pound monkey"

Her"What"

ME"All it would have taken was a 25 pound monkey to jump on you and you would have gone down."

The other one was

Her"can you help me plan this?"

Me"No"

Her"come on"

Me"You never help me plan anything"

Her"you don't plan anything. Ok fine I'll help you plan anything you want."

Me"Ok. zombie emergency plan"

Her"what"

Me"you know in case we get attacked by zombies"

Her"That's dumb"

Me"See. Well all that girl stuff is dumb"

Her"Well I always thought that if we got attacked by zombies you would be able to handle everything."

Me"And you can handle all that girl stuff. That's what makes this relationship work."

And that's a typical 5 minutes of my relationship.

what shits me is that most of the people who complain about rep threads are nearly always in one somewhere....some private high roller rep threads just go on and on, with stuff like "you must spread rep around before giving anymore to that other high roller you want to kiss ass with".

There's an abundance of DP'ers here with shitloads of rep just for masturbating some other Dp'er with loads of rep.

I know that some people really do deserve their rep for whatever reason - funny, cordial, informative but others who's whole purpose seems to be rep.

It's some form of social acceptance for some people, who without the use of a keyboard, wouldn't have very much "rep"

OK, several posts later I find that I've been given some red for this thread, some green, and my total rep has gone up 24 points. I have no intention of making posts just to get rep (either red or green) but it's obvious that some here are acutely tuned to awarding rep points at the slightest mention of a thread discussing reputation. ;) And that seems to be irrespective of the quality of the post or its' validity. Strange.

Thanks to those who awarded me green. I've believe I've learnt a fraction more about it: you can see your current level of reputation in your CP but there's no history to it and it's an annonymous system in that you don't know who's awarded you what. However, they can link to the particular post that their award relates to. Interesting.

Is it me or can I see a numeric rep value only for myself? When looking at the rep of others all you see are some green boxes and no number? Even when you look in their profile?

Perhaps each box of dark/light green stands for a particular value of rep?

Rep is not a major issue but it really bugs me that this forum is so good in other respects but actually so dismally useless at coming up with a decent FAQ on this subject.

I must admit I can't see what connection your conversations with your girlfriend have with the subject of this thread.

Back, on topic, is it possible to give neutral rep? I seem to have gotten some ... but I don't seem to be able to give it. I have choices for only "approve" or "disapprove" i.e. just positive or negative, not neutral.

Merkersarl,
You where very lucky to make a thread on reps and not get alot of red reputation from it.
You gave me a red rep for Hi jacking this thread. Well now it is back on topic.
Have a nice day and welcome to DP I will not rep you red back..

Neutral is gray and not neutral is just means you got it from a person that has not posted enough to have a rep point count.

Now why don't you go read the FAQ.

Weirfire, yes, and I did offer her a private explanation of why.

corena has been very decent and was kind enough to drop me a PM explaining her position and why she wasn't going to rate me down. And I've replied to that.

why don't you go read the FAQ.
That's the ironic part. The purpose of this thread was just to ascertain that. No FAQ exist on the subject of rep and I was hoping that this thread could serve as a substitute. (I'm not here to attract or dish out rep. I started this thread just to get some facts :( that are missing elsewhere).

You where very lucky to make a thread on reps and not get alot of red reputation from it.
It would be only the massively stupid or highly illitterrattee who read the opening post and assume I'm complaining about rep. But, hey, I can assure you they aren't extinct :). Some of them have the spine to sign the rep comments; that is refreshing.

However, I do get your point and I suppose I'll have to take some red rep for the sole reason that I asked a legitimate question.

corena, you have a PM.

I REPEAT go read the FAQ

FROM FAQ

If your 10th post was very recent, it might not be in affect yet. The system checks for users that need to be "upgraded" once an hour (on the 25th minute of the hour).

The forum has a reputation system that allows users to add or take reputation from other users (you can find details on how it works by clicking here).
If your reputation falls below a certain level, the system automatically revokes your ability to have a signature and live links.

If your reputation returns to being above the threshold level, the system automatically restores your ability to use live links and signatures.

So, this means it's a good idea to try and get along with others. :)

Link within FAQ

It's kind of like PageRank... users vote for other user's reputation (by clicking on the scale), and it's weighted by how "important" they are within the forum. It works like this right now:
Everyone starts with a reputation of 10
You can alter other people's reputation by 1 point by default
For every 365 days after you register, your altering power increases by 1
For every 1,000 posts, your altering power also increases by 1
For every 100 reputation points that other's give you, your altering power increased by 1
User must have at least 50 posts before they can affect other's reputation
You must have a reputation of 10 or higher to be able to affect others (it's 10 by default)
You can alter up to 10 user's reputations per day
You must alter different user's reputations before you can alter the same user's again

That clear it up?

lol I can assure you if I was going to leave a comment in a rep rep my grammar would be a lot better than it is there.

Get your facts right buddy before you cite your verbal attacks on people. ;)

More often than not I will just say in the thread what I think of the thread and in that particular case I just wondered why you had started a thread and not gone on to discuss why you were wondering. Someone obviously agreed with my point and gave you a negative reputation rather than stating in the thread that they agreed with me.

Merkersarl
Nov 14th 2005, 10:58 am
corena, thanks for reproducing that quote from Shawn (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=1616#post1616). Actually, we've had that right in the first reply itself ;)

Shawn's is a useful start but in no way a full FAQ of the rep sytem. I was hoping this thread would provide all the missing pieces. And, it was doing nicely too .... it has revealed a fair few facts that are "obvious" to the more experienced here but frustratingly unintelligible to the new comers. In addition to what Shawn listed we do know

- people can stay annonymous when giving either kind of rep
- rep can be accompanied by a brief message ... but it does not reveal the giver's identity unless s/he opts to do so
- rep can be associated with the thread and particular post it relates to
- there is a culture of awarding negative rep to whines about getting negative rep
- history of what rep you received and when does not extend past the last five awards
- you can see a numeric value for your own rep but not for others and you judge their rep based on the number of dark/light green squares they have (though I've no idea why some are dark and some light).
- other minor points (like there's such a thing as a grey box for neutral rep i.e. when someone wants to give you rep but hasn't been around long enough - though what purpose neutral rep serves is beyond me)

My thanks to aaron_nimmocks, Weirfire, HodgedUp, and corena who all tried to help ... and even to elkiwi for a passionate, flowery description of his perception :).

I had a simple question: Is there a FAQ? It appears there isn't. It would have been good to start with Shawn's points above and build a list of the missing links. But, that was not to be. Some juveniles took it as a opportunity to poke fun. Some half-wits assumed I was moaning about getting "red". And the discussion has meandered on to who's a big baby and who's not. Maybe it's time to say, "Thanks everybody, that largely answers my question", and leave it to Shawn to build a proper FAQ at some point if he feels it necessary.
