Do you have any suggestions for celebrity pictures, headshots preferably, as new and as cheap as possible?

The usual sites rarely have any, if they do they are old, and there's the rights problem as I assume I would have to pay both the photographer and the celebrity?!?

Generally, it's the photographer who owns the rights to a photograph. For photos of a celebrity in public, it's going to be the photographer. The rights usually rest with one or the other, so you probably wouldn't need to pay both. I would try contacting the celebrity agent or rep as I am sure they own the rights to select headshots - as long as your usuage is going portray them in a positive light (fan site, etc).

Just bumping this thread because I also am always looking for sources of celebrity stock.

I didn't find any on istockphoto but maybe someone can clarify.

istockphoto requires a signed model release for any photo with an identifiable person. It is not the right place to find celebrity photos.

If you are looking for a particular person, try searching their name in google with "stock photos"

That is completely false. Watermarks have nothing to do with legal use of a photograph. It is not legal to use images taken off the net unless you have a release from the photographer or owner of the image. When you take a picture, you establish an automatic copyright and anyone who "steals" your image is guilty of copyright infringement - which can result in civil damages and even criminal charges.

Hey i thought having no watermarks was like having no copyright issues. Thats what all the DP members sell their products as.

I wish it was that simple.

Apparently the easiest way would be to spend some time in California with your camera....;)

Some people watermark their photos to deter people from stealing them, hotlinking to them, or to advertiser their site - but it has nothing to do with copyrighting the image. If the "owner" of the photo discovers that you are using their image without permission, they can demand you take down the photo AND pay a usage fee for the unauthorized use - and a fee of several thousand dollars PER image is not uncommon. They basically get to set the fee they want.

A site owner is responsible for all content they place on their site - however they may turn around and sue anyone who supplied them with a copyrighted image that wasn't authorized to be used.

I used the designs that a a friend had made with photos of a celebrity (very flattering, btw) for merchandise on cafepress. Everything was pulled out, even when the "store" was a private one. This bugs me because we found no alternatives (like paying due copyright fees to the photographer) and all our work got thrown out the window. When you are using a photo that was published in magazine, or widely spread on the net, who do you contact for copyrights info?

A lot of celebs are hanging out in Costa Rica. My friend is a bodyguard for some of them. Mel Gibson, Brad Pitt, Angeline and many more have been in CR in the past 2 months. You can meet more celebs in person here than I think anywhere else in the world.
