1) 50 searches a day is still gd, think about if you got top on all 3 search engines, that 150 from one keyword a day alone, plus you also get the veriations like 'your keyword blue' 'red blue keyword' 'where to get keyword' etc etc

2) Search thru DP you will find plenty of info.

3) i dont think so, the only difference is that VB comes optimised, phpBB does not and requires some modding.

But i have seen a lot of forums which run very nicely while on the other hand some forums are having same hot topics but they fail to attract good number of members and posters.
What is keypoint behind it?

how its advertised i suppose,

- make some fake accounts on your forum and use these to post new, regular post so your forum looks active (not just same person posting all the time),
- make sure its user friendly,
- logout as view the board as a guest see if there is anything you might wanna do to encourage the guest to join.
- Visit other forums and see what they are doing
- Create topics that everyone can discuss, debates are normally gd for this (e.g. is xxx guilty or innocent - post your views/Should xxx do this or that?)
- Get a view different styles/templates in place - not everyone will like default blue or bright orange etc.
- Get links to it, there are some directories that are made just for message boards/forums.
- sorry brain has stopped working .........

I am inkling about one point you made that is fake ids and post on and on.

the most succesfful forums were started as just a gathering place for their content visitors or their service users. thus they already had traffic of like minded people and had the topics they wished to see in there. starting a standalone forum site and making it a hit will take time and much mroe effort and in 99% cases they all fail.

thats why i always say DONT make just a forum site, make the forum as an add-on.

I started a forum recently (applied the SEO Optimizer mod), and I noticed that MSN has definitely visited a lot of pages. It seems that Google and Yahoo, however, have stopped at the first page. Does anyone know if this is normal? It's a phpbb forum.

There is nothing to do with SEO impacts.Actually SEO is optimization so you can optimize both forums equally with one exception that is 'ease'.
vB is costly but it has worth. So vB is easy to SEO.

I don't follow your logic here. What does the price have to do with ease of SEO?

phpBB is free. It's also easy to SEO.

Have you removed the SID from the URLs?

Yes, I think I did when I applied the able2know mod. Actually, since I wrote that original post I see that Google has indexed many of the posts on my forum. I guess that Google just takes its own sweet time, whereas MSN is all-too-eager to crawl my site.
