Build Links by distributing a free eBook

I have hit a dead end trying to build links to one of my websites. I've now made a useful (in my opinion) eBook on the sites topic.

My question: Is distributing the eBook for free a good way of building links?
Have any of you done something similar? Any tips would be helpful in this regards.

i haven't done this anytime, but surely its a good way, then also depends on how good the book comes out.

What do you think is the best way to get it out in the open?

I reckon I should contact related sites and tell them to put it on there site and add a link back to me if they want.
Also inside the eBook I will make a note that anyone can add this too there website. A link back to my site is not required but will be appreciated.

Building links can be tough at times. I have personally seen sellers on ebay that give away free ebooks with their sales. Just one suggestion anyhow. Good luck!
