check the WHOIS to see if it's already registered before trying to register

The domain name will go into redemption mode after it is expired. It is only available for registration once it drop out of the expired mode and it is freely available like any unregistered domain name.
Alternatively, you can contact the former owner and negotiate with them to take over the domain name, you probably need to pay a redemption fee of about $150 or so. Otherwise, you probably need to wait for it to completely released.

So this means the domain isn't dropped yet. When the domain hits "Pending Delete" status, it's in this period for 5 days and drops on the 6th day.
Good domains are caught by domain kiters with lots of $. They register thousands of domains every week

I go here http://www.odditysoftware.com/page-googledomains.htm to look up domains that are expiring with page rank. I check the page rank to see if it is still showing good.
I have tried to backorder several good domains with high page rank and I never get them; they almost always ends up with SnapNames.
I have purchased 4 expired domains from SnapNames with PR5s. I immediately put good content on the websites and work my back links.
Three of the domans dropped to PR0 then went up to PR2. One domain went to a PR2 then back up to a PR3.
I am not sure this is a good way to buy PR domains because they dropped down so bad.
Looks like most the good domains end up with SnapNames and you can bid on them.

You can get the domain list here http://www.nameslot.com/Other-Lists-f-17.html
Some members do post the available and expiring domains in that section on the forum :)
Thanks.

If the registrar hasn't auctioned it and if the expired domain name has gone
past any so-called "grace period" first. Just trying to set it straight here lest
people get any funny ideas how this goes.
Shadez9, check with the registrar first what they'll do to an expired domain.

If a domain is expired, the register company often know if there's any traffic/value in it. they may renew to take advantage of the traffic if the owner takes no action. like go daddy.
