Most of the bloggers I know use WordPress. It is easy to set up, modify, and there are tons of places to find help, templates, and plugins for free.

wordpress is easy for novices, and advanced enough for professionals. almost every famous blogger and blogging guru uses wordpress... so decide for yourself ;)

Congrats on your decision to start out! I think you'll be glad you did . . . it is quite fun and semi-addicting.

Why would you go and change your software if you're happy with it? Consider the implications for links to your posts

Ahh . . . I see. I thought you were going to change your already established sites. Again, I have to ask . . . if you're so happy with WP and familiar with it, what would motivate you to change? Is it just an experiment of sorts?

Fair enough. I don't recommend any others, though. Let us know your experiences.

Use serendipity. It has the most features and is highly configurable.

Sure! You just need to edit one file and you can easily place banners on the top of your WP blog. I'd recommend using OpenAds to run your ad management.
