if someone has an idea for a domain name that's worth something...and it's unregistered...i highly doubt they'd pass it on to you ;)
Good luck though :D

I am willing to sell you my names for the right price. ;) They are definately a great investment.

Exactly right. If it's free, nobody's going to tell anyone.

I think the OP was only looking for it as an investment, not for development

A good domain has good keywords in it. First, look for a very popular keyword term that is searched.. if you can get a .com for it, that would make an excellent start..

I don't want to dissapoint you but this is NOT easy
Let me explain, there are 2 cases for your request :
1. Go and register a new name and wait to find the righ end buyer at the next 12 months
2. Go and buy a good name and try to sell it higher to make profit
Now with the 1st case you can have a great return say 100-300% or more but a low value name ($50-500) in the 2nd case you must have a large amount and your risk is big compared with the 1st
In both cases the common problem is finding the right buyer which is EXTREMELY difficult not only for newbies but for experiences users too
Another variable is the industry niche for the domain
If you find and take the best domain for something not advertised at the net too much will be not be too good investement
I for example lost about $12.500 in one investement but took $55.000 in another one so i balanced them
Check my "Domain Names Megamarket 2007" link to have some ideas

Just like any other business, study your market before getting into it.
1> Well the real secret here is to find niche specific domains which will be in high demand tomorrow.
For ex: Know any 'Gonna be' celebrity/sports star or as a matter of fact anyone who'll be famous? Thing he/she will make it big tomorrow? If you are nodding an yes, then rush and pick up a domain related to 'em. Either park are start fiddling around with it.
That should fetch you some nice money in future.
2> Keep an eye on 'abandoned' good domains which have relatively good PR. Register them as soon as they are available. Keep 'em for some time or better sell 'em immediately.
If you think you'll notice that there are a lot of ways you can make money from domains. But for anything you need to take ACTION.
All Success,
G

You are better off purchasing a domain on the secondary market.
