Building Links on a New Directory?

Hi guys, I have just started my first directory yesturday. I don't expect miracles to happen but I would like to know your views and oppinions of how you would market your own directory.

How would you get people to the site?

How would you advertise? (freely at first)

Where would you drive traffic from?

Only a few questions but this new directory is trial and error. I already have a few links added but as a typical web developer I want more! I just can't seem to find where to drive the traffic from. Also i'm in competition with my mate to see who can get the most links, should be fun!

If anyone could help I would love to hear your facts, advise, help.

Announce your site at the Solicitations & Announcements (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65) forum of DP. Accept links for free at the first. After you have get good contents and after you have got a good search engine ranking, ask for payment. Also submit your directory to as many free directories as you can.

Great advise, thanks. Yeah I usually submit to directories with new sites I just thought directories submitting to directories wasn't a good idea. Obdviously I was wrong. Checking that other site out now too!
