View Full Version : Feature request: exclusion of "Rated R+" sites

I'm suprised this has not been brought up before:
I know an upgrade is in the works; this may be too late to be included in that - but it would probably be appreciated by quite a few site owners that run "family friendly" websites.
It would be nice if there were a checkbox to allow or disallow sites from being displayed that were adult oriented / explicit content sites. The advertisers would have to check a box stating that the link was to an adult site, though I don't think there would be any way to enforce that.
I see when an ad is submitted it says "pending review" but I just assumed that meant checking for proper links etc. I would assume also that it is not checked by a human, which would probably be one of the only ways to ensure compliance.
This brings up a lot of questions as to when a site would be considered "adult" or "explicit", but at least it is worth discussing (the feature request - not censorship etc.)

Currently adult oriented ads are not accepted at all, so...

There is an ad on the network right now titled "Stag Night."
I followed the link and it looked "Adult" to me.
Just curious, does this qualify as adult oriented?

Where on the site you are referring to do you see anything adult oriented (I don't know what site you are talking about).

They advertise "stag weekends" in fact the site is stagweekends.co.uk. If a surfer did not know what a "stag party" (Usually includes strippers and drinking) was, the site would seem tame, except for the link to:
http://stagweekends.co.uk/?page=lapdancingnottingham
under the anchor text "lap dancing nottingham" which offers a preview of what you'll get if you sign up for their lap dancing club membership.
Not something I would really want kids looking at - Little Susie: Mommy, what is lap dancing? And why does daddy's site link to it?
I guess if you can't sell hustler panties through the network, you shouldn't be able to sell lap dancing / bachelor / bachelorette parties.
Just my $.02

I'm not showing the http://stagweekends.co.uk/?page=lapdancingnottingham URL being on any ad in the network.

It must have been removed. I am no longer seeing it.

a rating system is a great idea... i'm sure there are plenty of sites that wouldn't mind this at all... and that's fine!
but what if you were trying to increase ranking for something like this? - http://www.kidinnovation.com/

i would definitely consider that an adult site, maybe it doesn't have pictures on the front page, but the information is enough - things like stripppers and lapp dannnces.

I could see a site like the above not wanting the link stag party to come up on their site.
And if you do look around that other site, there is nudity.

I am the webmaster of said site.
There is nothing I would consider questionable. Ok theres speak of lapdancing but only the words lapdancing and a price.
No swearing, nudity is on the site however there is ample ample warning before you get to see any and by default it is hidden. So people squeemish about such things have plenty of "opt out" moments.
Example: http://www.stagweekends.co.uk/?page=nottingham.club.offer
Only people who would want to see it see it....
I'll happily ammend things if it upsets you.
However where is the line drawn? Coop link to a site that then links to a porn site?
If the word "lapdancing" offends im on a non winner. I'll happily edit/remove pictures but the site isn't adult, or close (in my biased opinion)

I don't think it's the site that bothers people as much as the anchor text... I wouldn't want to see the anchor text of lap dancing on my site. What if I just used the word "sex" as anchor text and link to my photography forum? The forum is clean... ;)

Dec 17th 2004, 10:58 am
Another fair point. Maybe there should be some forbidden words from the anchor text like Google Ad-Words uses...

I wouldn't either. Not as an adult, but from a kids point of view it would be adult. From looking, the person is doing a really good job of trying to keep it clean.
But the Co-op will always have a wide variety of sites, so you will always have unrelated links and sites linking to you. So if it is a problem for someone, I think it would be their choice to be in or out of the Co-op.

I don't know who said I had, but I haven't. Lapdancing is such a small percentage of the business.
The *only* keywords that point to this site are:
stag p*arty
stag n*ight
stag w*eekend
stag d*o
(and some plurals of the above)
Added *'s because I don't want this page ranking in the serps :)

I agree, by the very nature of the coop network there surely are always going to be sites that you personally object to...?

well, for me "personally" it's not that big a deal, altough it does cheapen the value of sites that are very "business" in my book.
of couse this isn't nudity ...
---- nudity removed ----- :) see it here http://stagweekends.co.uk/club.package.nottingham.gif
my kids could do without that.
and i thought we're talking about R sites, not X?
you have no control of what a site you link to links to... that's where you draw the line.
i would like the option to tune down to a PG rating for a site that builds links for kid activities.
this network is awesome, it would just make it even better to be able to offer this to the kid friendly sites i have relationships with.

i guess my site has adult stuff on it, but its aimed at under 18's mostly, its not what i would class as an adult site even though it has pics of erect penii and vagina's. its an educational site, and contains what it needs to get safe sex across to teens

regarding an algo considering adult, don't forget we design for humans and try to beat the machine.

I don't object to any of them, as long as they are legal.
I don't think your site should be excluded, but I do think some sites might not want links like it to show up in it.
Maybe have a Kid Sites only Co-op.

i think its a site that has a need, and needs to be used, by all that think about having sex, i cover stuff thats aimed at all ages from about 10 for females, and 12 for males, and upwards, well if you found something of use @ 30 years old, then that means i am doing something right, and thanx for the boost, i need it just now. i was not going to post a link to it, but if people wanna look, then they can, http://www.asksam2.com CONTAINS SOME GRAPHIC PICS

Fair point but I wouldn't class it an "adult site".
Let me tell you something. If my SO happened upon this site - or any site with half naked women and my son (7 years) saw it I would freak. Truly. (And this site isn't that bad - imagine my reaction if he laid eyes on a real porn site) The firewall would get password protected and his (SO's) computer would *only* be able to access kid friendly sites for awhile. He knows it. Kids are way too impressionable with this kind of stuff and you have to be careful. Same with TV. It is an adult site; no matter how you slice it. Boobs hangin out is an adult thang; not a kid thing. Same with an erect penis. Kids have enough to contend with, and need to learn about the bod - but not like this.
Regarding the word stag - I distinctly remember finding my dads stash of Stag magazines when I was a kid.
That said; it's not *that* bad, and I can accept it as such, since the site is well done. I won't give up the network because of it.

Maybe just adding an R rating for other to check on or off. I personally would not want to exchange links with his site, and yes, it is done in a way that wouldn't freak me out if my kid got onto the page, because he would just hit back and not have to see anything.
Our golf site is visited by all ages, kids included, but I consider it family friendly and wouldn't want something questionable.
Thanks for listening...........

Then surely the answer is if you don't like the lack of control don't join or participate in the network?

no its not, but there are pages of info that are,
http://www.asksam2.com/femalesexuality/femalehygiene.php
http://www.asksam2.com/femalesexuality/menstruation.php
http://www.asksam2.com/general_safety/internet.php
http://www.asksam2.com/general_safety/rights.php
http://www.asksam2.com/abusedepression/childabuse.php
its difficult to cover this kind of subject without an overlap of some sorts, and i think education before they act, is far better than looking up "how to tell mom i'm pregnant @ 14"
i said 10 for females because we can start our periods soon after that age, but its best to know about them, before they start, my mother never told me a thing about them, my site is not targeted at 10 year old, but it has info that some 10 year olds would look for.

i wont join a network like this, because i think my site has no place in it, if people want to look it up, they will, i dont make money from my site, its free to use, and thats how i would like to keep it.
