Top 500? I don't think there are 500 top search engines is there? Most search engines (the little ones) are powered by other big major search engines.

Top 500?
Do even people go to the search engine which is going to be number 500?
I probably think there could be traffic worth targetting only in the top 20 or 50 SE's.
Categorizing 500 would be a waste of time according to me :)

You mean top 500 directories or top 500 Search engines ?

google, yahoo, msn make up for like 87% or so of all the search queries on the net... so other than those big 3 - the rest are all competing for the remaining share.
I wouldn't spend too much working with or looking into these SE - sure if they happen to start sending you traffic great - or if you bump into one - cool.

So as you can see, between those 3 engines, they have pretty much monopolized this area of the net, which will more than likely never change. :)
I would concentrate on the top 500 directories rather than engines, that would seem more productive. =]

Well if you take the search engines that don't use Google Results, I don't think you'll end up with many.
Actually Baidu was missed out, just because it's in Chinese doesn't mean it's really good!
But asking for list "top 500" is still very funny... how long it could take to met this requirements? What a waste of time... :)

500 search engines? There are thousands of search engines but I only know few engines only and personally I feel there is no need to bother about the rest unless you are compiling a list. ;)

Hmm..
I feel you are wrong. Yahoo can be ahead of Google on the whole as a "website".
But as a search engine, Google tops the list.

The only reason I can think of wanting all those is to add them to a robots exclude file so they don't waste your bandwidth... since they almost never deliver any traffic anyway. :D

You could just go to alexa.com and use the keyword 'Search Engine' you only get about 97,096,000 sites in result! :D
There you can see the rank of the search engine and make your list :D

This is a complete waste of time. The top 3 will give you 99% of the traffic. No need to even think about the smaller one. maximum, you need to consider the top 5 nothing more than that.
Submitting to search engines is a total waaste. they are meant to find you through incoming links! No need to sumit to google either. if there is links pointing to your site, they are gonna find you. If there is no backlinks, there is no point in submitting. You are never going to rank anywhere on top results!
Google and Yahoo sharing the search index is another bullshit. Dont be so silly, this forum is visted by some master SEO's!

I think the number of search engines which use their own technology like spider, index and ranking technology is limited. I know the following ones with unique technology:
Google
Yahoo
Msn
Teoma
Walhello
Gigablast
Wisenut
Exalead
Searchhippo
