Alexa ranking never really means much.
it only counts how many visitors with the alexa toolbar visit your site.

Also, for me your site appears to be 1million+.. not 10k?

And finally, to boost your traffic submit it to directories, link building, PPC.. etc :)

Install the Alexa toolbar on your machine and visit your own site a few times a day. That should be enough to get you around 100k. Get a few buddies to do the same for you and you can do even better. Alexa is very easy to game until you get below 50k or so. Then you need to work even harder at it, get a lot of webmaster traffic (ie. other people who care enough about Alexa rankings to install the toolbar), or flat out have a ton of traffic.

You also have to keep in mind what industry you are in. For instance a truck and car website that sells and buys will never be in the top 1K or even 10K for that matter. Those sites are more for link sites, search engines, or social networking sites. Take that into account when looking at alexa as well. For instance it's easy to get a dir under 250,000 but tomake a forum on a niche topic would be alot harder so everything is relevant.

Also you mayb e making muchmore $ on your site at 1 Million than someone running a DIR at 100,000.:D

Well of course it wont bring you traffic, its merely an indicator of traffic which as we know can be "fixed".

When selling advertising or even your site you can rest assure potential customers will look at it. OK they might not take it into consideration but they will still look at it.

In saying that yes its not really worth spending time on.

Alexa rank purely depend on traffic your site gets. The more traffic you get Alexa rank of site will be that better.

Just take steps to increase traffic to your site. That improves Alexa Rank

This is a bit off topic, but I've been using the Alexa toolbar for quite some time now. I was using it with IE 6 and was observing an impeovement in the Alexa Rank. But since I've started using IE 7, I've seen no change in the Alexa Ranking.

I think Alexa toolbar doesnt works with IE 7.

Has any body else noticed the same?

forumGuru
Mar 14th 2007, 9:49 am
honestly, you shouldn't worry about it. Like some of the others have already stated, it's a measure of how much traffic you get from users that have the toolbar installed so not really important. Technical sites will probably have a higher rating because of the userbase. Install it yourself so you at least get that advantage, but don't place too much emphasis on it.

ronaldmarva
Mar 14th 2007, 9:01 pm
Significance of Alexa Ranking depends on how you intend to use it. As a measure of how much traffic you get only from users that have the toolbar installed, makes the data of less significance.

i have read that google does look at alexa ranking for AL Google...and it gives a small point for having a high rank...i can't remember where i read it.
but i don't even think it's true at least not now anymore...since alexa doesn't use google technology anymore....

but i always look at alexa rank...i can't surf with out my alexa toolbar.

get a toolbar and every once in a while surf ur own website and u'll see alexa will bring it up.

good luck

I read the page linked in one of the other posts, and I'd like to clarify something - does the activex thing that shows your alexa ranking to visitors also report back to alexa? Meaning that all visitors will count towards your ranking, not just those with the toolbar installed?

Or am I misunderstanding that part of the article?

Thanks.

My site is well ranked in Alexa and has lots of positive comments. I believe that this helps my Google ranking as I am told that Google gets a lot of its info from Alexa.

I think Alexa is very important to antone wanting to get a good Google rank.

Anyone have any ideas how Alexa gathers its info. Is it through the Alexa Tool Bar per chance?

Thanks

Yup its called the magical toolbar :D , without users having it on their browsers and visiting your site means alexa does not know that user exists at all. And what makes you say google relies on alexa for site ranking ?

To improve Alexia ranking:

1. install the toolbar and use it to view every page in your website once a day. Repeat and do again with a different computuer with a different IP, if you want.

2. Encourage your visitors to install the toolbar

3. submitting to directories helps some, if the directory is human edited and they have the toolbar installed and they visit your page with it.

Thats a nice hot topic samantha in itself, cause some say its not spyware at all. So you cannot tell someone not to tell others to install alexa toolbar cause the user mentioning the same did not invent alexa toolbar and cannot be held responsible for any losses if any on using alexa toolbar. The only reason you would need to worry about your Alexa rating is if you are working with an advertiser that demands a certain Alexa score or pays more the lower your number is. Those advertisers are stupid, but I'm sure many people have to deal with these types. As someone said before, Alexa only works by using the stats from people who have downloaded its toolbar. It is basically spyware, but if an Alexa score is something you have to be concerned with then it's a necessary evil.

Why focus on ALexa Ranking? while Alexa Ranking is not an accurate in terms of ranking it is just an approximate computation of visits of site... it means not accurate and by the way it is manipulated there are lots of how to make a high Alexa rankings.. Just search for it...

If I were you focus on SERPs rankings.... if your site have many visitors or traffic your Alexa rankings will also affected.. Making it high also... :D

Alexa rank like others have mentioned can be manipulated, but if you want to do well with text link ads and adbrite (amongst others) it is an important and necessary part of there criteria

I.E get it down (by the widget technique and/or the search engine toolbar technique) - you get paid more or receive more offers

One other thing to note if you install the alexa widget on your site make sure you put it on every page! I installed the widget on just the home page of one of my proxies and the rank went from an average of 400000 to 800000

I have obviously removed it since and the site is now about 250000

-----------------------------------

Other sites i installed it on went from 8million to 1million :)

-----------------------------------

So its swings and roundabouts for the widget technique ;)

I refer to Alexa all the time when buying websites or links through ad networks and for those of you saying Alexa doesn't matter I have a question for you :

would you buy an ad' from

A site ranked 2000 000+ and sending 8000 visitors a day.

or

A site ranked 2000 and sending 8000 visitors a day.

This is a common occurence when buying ad's, the ones ranked in millions in alexa wouldn't be getting close to 8000 visitors per day, so it would seem they would be cheating the system and send bots as hits.

Where as a site in the top 2000 would have plenty of visitors and 8000 visitors per day from them is more believable.

Now my answer is this, spend $200 - $300 per week (on ad's) and you will be in the top 20 000 within 3 weeks, we have done this and within the first three months we were ranked 50 000ish and now we are within the top 20 000 sites daily and the overall Alexa rank drops daily.

alexa doesn't mean much at all (if anything) aside from certain advertisers who actually look at the ranking.

Generally it is pretty much spot on. I.e. if a site has a 5,000 alexa rating, then you can clearly see its a well trafficked site.

Now alexa results lower than 10,000 are pretty much worthless.

You can download the alexa toolbar and whenever you visit your own site the traffic would be updated at alexa. Alexa has a very funny system of ranking. For example a site having 100 visitors per day could have a higher ranking (i.e. less importance) as compared to a site having 20 visitors per day and alexa toolbar.

Alexa is nothing but a scam to get more people to use their toolbar....

not agree with you...
what profit will they get if all use their toollbar and toolbar dont include ads. It include Trend, Rank, Related Links which help us to get information of that site. They not only look at the number of hits from the toolbar, They also see the quality of their website and the contant. My proxy gets 1000 hits per day and still it do not have any rank...

Data collection continues to disappoint if you don't have conversions or revenue. If Alexa shows your website as top 1000, then you may be able to get good money on CPM. However, every ad server will be tracking their own impressions, so your one million Alexa impression don't mean anything unless your website can deliver those impressions to the clients ad server with real tracking.

Alexa rankings, and similar ranking data tools should only be used for research and entertainment.
