Can anyone recommend a free / cheap full featured directory script that I can use to create my new directory?

You can take a look at PHP Link Directory script review here http://www.webdirectorywatch.com/web-directory-scripts/php-link-directory.html and see is this script something you would like to use.

check cplinks: http://www.cplinks.com/

creates static pages which are highly search engine friendly, load fast and can deliver huge numbers of links and page impressions with low server loads

I highly reccommend you try out Particle Links (http://links.particlesoft.net/)

I searched Google for "asp directory script" and guess who's on top? DP! here's the thread (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=4575) and the relevant url (http://www.duware.com/)

I've used some of those DUWare scripts before. They are done fairly well, and you can't beat the price (free), but I'd give them only a 6/10 score overall. I had to heavily modify their classifeds script to be anything real useful and secure.
