Hi,

if you go the phpbb forum contribution section of the php site and search for SEO you'll find a hack (SEO 2.0 i think its called) that includes the mod_rewrite.

You can see a working example at http://www.beastcomputers.co.uk/forum/

I think this is what you're looking for.

:-)

I won't bother doing it unless I can have the title in there...

That one you posted looks good, I just want to see it more attractive to prospective clickers.

I may have a go myself. :)

I use the able to know mod on my rugby forum and it is the mutts nuts. The only thing I didn't impliment was the mod that hides the signatures from the search engines. The site went from a few hundred pages indexed, to some 6000 or so within a couple of weeks.

I use the Able2Know MOD on three forums, without the mod_rewrite portion. It works very well indeed. The mod_rewrite is overkill and unnecessary.

SEbasic
Aug 18th 2005, 8:14 am
Why do you say that?

If you can get targetted words in the URL, it makes a pretty substantial difference.

The able2know mod referenced above by Bernard does both.

Because I have a lot of pages indexed and popping up for relevant search terms with that MOD implemented and without mod_rewrite.

See http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2005-20,GGLG:en&q=site%3Awww%2Epsychlinks%2Eca%2Fphpbb

Results 1 - 10 of about 17,200 from www.psychlinks.ca/phpbb

Are you coming up for searches?

Any site I've owned that has the Title and description removed ends up being buried at the bottom of the index somewhere.

It's very frustrating.

Anyway, aside from that - Keywords in URL help me on my sites - It's just another factor that's there rather than not being there I guess...

I also think it increases the CTR in search results when people can see actual words in the URL, rather than post/thread ID's

Yes. Very definitely. Indeed, new members have said frequently that they found the forum by searching on a specific disorder, medication, problem, etc. My web stats for the forum also bear this out: specific search strings leading to specific posts or threads.

And by the way, the able2know mod optimizes for post and thread title (or at least my implementatioin of it does, with the forum name at the very end):

Example: http://www.psychlinks.ca/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2746

Look at the page title and cf. the post/thread title.

Are the referrers coming from Google though?

I get traffic on the sites that have no title or description, but generally only from the other two engines.

It's a nice mod - I'm gonna have a play..

Yes. Most of the SE referrals for that forum are from Google (by far). Number 2 for many months is AOL, believe it or not. Then MSN, AskJeeves, etc. Yahoo rarely.

The forum generates separate stats from the other Psychlinks stats so these data are ONLY for the forum.

Blimey....

Well I never - I bet you get a lot more traffic too if you had the Title and Description in the Results...

I hate google.

Is that Mod fully compatable with EasyMod? I mean have you tried it with no issues?

That thread is 128 pages long so I am hoping for the quick answer

Then I am going to go back and read the entire explanation.

Bernard

I don't know what EasyMod is, but the links to the able2know mod in the first post or two of the referenced thread point to the latest version of the mod.

No it's not. Do it manually ~ takes about 10-15 minutes for the basics if you're experienced with PHP or modding phpBB.

I do for some searches, though most of the pages that show up in the site: query won't show that.

I was getting an odd snippet in certain search results that I couldn't find anywhere on my site or in directory submissions, etc. Finally, the mystery was solved when I was editing some of the phpBB files and found the description in one of the pages -- I'd forgotten I added it (or perhaps I added it on a DrunkRank=7 day...).

When I get time, I'll look at varying that meta description better across different threads...

I hate google.
I love Google. Google loves me.
We're a happy family...

OK, I usually do any Mods that aren't off the phpBB site by hand but I figured if it was stable I would give it a try

10-15 minutes I can take...Some of those Mods are hugh if you do them by hand

AH I should add that I do NOT use mod rewrite also. :( I meant to say that in my original post.

Bernard
Aug 18th 2005, 1:42 pm
ditto. I have not used the mod rewrite, but I have used about 90% of the rest of the able2know mod.

Since using the A2K mod the traffic from search to the forum has shot up honestly it really has. Also spidering has increased significantly (obviously) but now new posts are picked up within hours and are ranking top notch as well (if they are on topic that is).

minstrel
Aug 18th 2005, 5:11 pm
I found the same. Basically all you need from the MOD is Part 1 and Part 2. It makes a huge difference, not only in getting the site spidered but in getting it found by actual searchers once the pages are indexed.

I would be very careful about having hyphenated urls, as they are surely going to be the next item to attract a filter IMO.

SEbasic
Aug 19th 2005, 5:22 am
What are you basing that on?!?!?

So they are going to penalise sites with URL's that are readable by humans...

Oh come on.....

Old Welsh Guy
Aug 19th 2005, 6:09 am
Sorry I just read my post and it is not clear. I am not saying penalise, I am saying filter out of importance. Google is now using human intervention on sites, and have admitted as much. No point in doing something that is not going to help was my thoughts.

Look at it from another angle. Why should a site with the domain name of best-damn-widgets-ever.com/blue-widgets/blue-widget-information.php get benefit from it? Many eople who use the hyphenated domain thing also use some other SEO tactics, some of which might go against the Google guidelines.

What am I basing it on? Nothing really, as I said it was IMO. That said, hyphenated stuff do much better in Yahoo and MSN, this is probably because they put more weight on internal linking anchor text though.
