1
a : overall quality or character as seen or judged by people in general
b : recognition by other people of some characteristic or ability
<has the reputation of being clever>
2 : a place in public esteem or regard : good name

It's kind of like PageRank... users vote for other user's reputation (by clicking on the scale), and it's weighted by how "important" they are within the forum. It works like this right now:
Everyone starts with a reputation of 10
You can alter other people's reputation by 1 point by default
For every 365 days after you register, your altering power increases by 1
For every 1,000 posts, your altering power also increases by 1
For every 100 reputation points that other's give you, your altering power increased by 1
User must have at least 50 posts before they can affect other's reputation
You must have a reputation of 10 or higher to be able to affect others (it's 10 by default)
You can alter up to 10 user's reputations per day
You must alter different user's reputations before you can alter the same user's again
That clear it up? :)

Oh, my old freind SEOAM, one of the little ones that likes to send PM to moderators, where is your friend Zoolander, maybe he can come here and send some PM to Shawn, I am sure you will pitch in.
How does it feel to be famous on the forum circuit SEOam, you know you and Zoolander were the subjects of a very hot thread here on DP.
Now VS, don't get to close to these two, I would not want to put you in the baby catagory, I like the other side when they are fair, but to conspire to get a member banned like Zoolander and SEOAM did to me at SEOCHAT, by sending PM to moderators, now that is the definition of a real couple of jerks.
SEOAM, can you answer a YES or NO question yet? Now when you can not win a debate, do you still like to get the other side that is correct banned, when you are not able to fabricate an answer or find any facts to back up your positon?

Yea Guy from Chicago, I am all for not giving Shawn Credit too.
Now wait, we must let Shawn respond on this, did he alter the V package somehow to get me lowered to the depths of never live linking again.
Or did VS somehow rig the vote against me, sort of sounds like the last Presidential Election, the vote in Florida were rigged against Al Gore, yes I know that Shawn and Al Gore have a lot in common.

The only person to blame for you being at -58 is YOU.
There are quite a few members at this forum and I'm willing to bet you are the one in the "negative."
Think about that. It's not a conspiracy, it's a democracy.
Stop trying to hijack every thread with the intent of making it about YOU. You spend way too much time posting about YOU and how people are against YOU. Try posting in a way that brings value to this forum & you just might see your rep improve.

Just about every where I have traveled I discover a new name for my flip flops, step ins, thongs, house shoes, sandals, beach skippers, etc. etc.
I reckoned that was likely what was meant.
In fact, though, "step-ins" (also just "stepins") was the prevalent term in the '20s and '30s for the product you sell. I have only encountered the term in the humorous fiction of Thorne Smith (Topper is his best-known, though not his best, work, but they're all riotously funny), where it occurs quite often--Marian Kirby is a lot looser than the character on the severely white-washed TV series with Leo G. Carroll, and a pair of "step-ins" occupied by a shapely but invisible ghost, clad in nothing else, running down Main Street is the sort of thing one finds regularly in Smith's works, which I urgently recommend to anyone who can find them in a library.
When I first ran into the term, I had to look it up on line to be sure it meant what it seemed to, and yes, it shows up in news reports from that era.

The first place they appear is as either a green or red square on the top right of your post right after it gives the number for the number of posts you have made.
You give people points by clicking on the scales icon at the top right of a person's post. You can see the last few votes you got if you go to your own control panel -- see the menu bar top left item "User CP".
I think that does it. Now after you have posted 50 messages you can come back to this post and click on my scale and give me some positive rep for helping you. :) :)

I am quite new to this forum. I visited when an acquaintance gave me the URL. I thought it would be a good place to learn more about Web business and share the things I'm good at.
While checking out various threads, I came on one about swearing in the forum. I replied to a comment made by a member who said that everyone swears. I don't and said so. I said so respectfully. Not only were some of the replies disrespectful in tone, but when I went back to the Use CP link, I noticed that I had a red mark by name. The explanation? "I disagree."
I came to this thread, looking for some clarification. I moderate a private forum that does not have a ranking system. If it did, I would expect it to relate to something about the quality of a person's replies, rather than to whether current members agree with opinions or not.
As I've read through this entire thread, I've tried to understand the culture of this forum. It seems there is a lot of banter between people who seem to know each other. Some of it involves the sort of punch-in-the-arm cameraderie I see "guys" using with each other to express affection.
It also seems there are some comments that are intended as personal insults.
Am I reading this correctly?
If I expect my ideas to be taken seriously and treated with the sort of respect I afford others and their ideas, should I stay in this forum or pack up my tent and go elsewhere?
As a new person, I have no desire to impose my culture. I only want to understand the culture I find myself in here.

Impose anything you want and just take it on the chin from those who disagree with you for no rhyme or reason. The cream will float to the top. :)
If you think like you are in your post, you'll go crazy here. Most will tell you exactly how they feel. That's life. Use what you can and discard the rest.

You've used two words that are clarifying things for me.
Think and feel.
I do try to keep posts in a forum about Web business in the thinking realm.
And I think you have answered my question. The culture here is about letting feelings all hang out regardless of the effect that might have on someone else.
It would be repugnant for me to impose my ideas. Share them, yes. Impose them, no.
And I certainly have no need to put my chin anywhere if the expectation is that it will be socked. Not only am I not equipped for fisticuffs, I have no desire to enter training for that.
I am a person who takes some joy in sharing what I know. I teach as well as edit. I also love to learn. The effective exchange of ideas happens best in an atmosphere of respect. (I'm defining effective here to mean an exchange in which a person hears what someone else is saying and seriously considers the merits and possibly changes -- learns.)
I've been a little taken aback by several comments I've come across, where one person asks for feedback, gets it in what sounds to me like a helpful neutral comment, and comes back with a defensive comment, sometimes suggesting the person who offered an opinion was less than intelligent. In my experience, those kinds of defensive comments are born of fear, which is definitely in the feeling category.
I have no need to change the culture of this fourm. I only wanted to understand it so I could decide if it was a place I would choose to spend some of my valuable time.
It's been a very interesting experience.
Your comment helped me see what is at the foundation. And you are right, this environment would drive me crazy.

There is a fascination with reputation and the garnering of it which is quite amusing. The best reputation is one which is a side effect of going about your business. And I suspect that alot of the reputation given is for witty rejoinders in the Chat forums and not for comment and advice in the "business" part of the forum.
I first became aware of reputation when one very vocal member joined and gained himself a bad reputation and complained because his outspokeness gained him many black marks. We've since learned how to manage him ;)
I know that other members actively chase reputation points with the same enthusiasm as I used to collect girl scout badges! They're also actively trying to boost their post count...
If you build a community there may be banter and if so you need to give that some space. I'd say try to keep it clean and use the forum software to automate that - but other than that how tight you want it is up to you. Some people will not like heavily moderated forums. I know another where there has been an exodus since full moderation was turned off.
Hope this helps :)

One way to get lots of greens is to complain about unfair reds, there will be about 20 people that give you a red to "make up for it" :)
I have mixed feelings about reputation. It is sort of nice to rate people, so that they can't post live links or such if they spam, or something of the like. But it also can easily get out of hand. People rate you down for no reason at all... I tend to do the oposite. The only thing I ever give reds for is people spamming their ref. url :)
I just give out greens at random ;)

In some of the fights about red rep etc. some people have accused others of being the constant source of the red reps. But that really isn't possible. I don't know how much rep you have to spread around before you can rep the same person twice, but it is substantial.
So if you really wanted to attack someone via the rep system you'd have to spend all day repping everyone else on the forum before you could get back and hit your target even a second time let alone multiple times.
digitalpoint
Jun 12th 2005, 5:39 pm
Not only that, but you can only give so much rep per day. Which means you can only "hit" the same person once every few days at best.

This post on a Women's Tennis Forum :-) seems to answer a lot of questions about reputation it's a bit old but seems to still be relevant - Here's the link http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=59544 and the post
About the bubbles and their colors:
next to your posts you see a little bubble. It can be black, green, gray or red - and there can be more than one. If you put your arrow over it a little info-label will come up, telling you something about your reputation. The better your reputation, the more flattering the info.
.
BLACK means your reputation is "off": others won't be able to see how you are doing reputation-wise. You can put it on or off in your user cp: click on user cp, click on options - it's the second option in the list.
.
GREEN means you have a good reputation. I think this means you have AT LEAST 1 point. First you'll get an extra one for every 100 points you reach; later on you'll need more than 100 points for each extra bubbles...
.
GRAY means you don't have a particular reputation. I THINK it means you have less than 1 point (and more than what? minus 10? I don't know.)
.
RED means you have a really bad reputation...
.
About points: looking them up, giving, and taking away...:
at the right from the "On/offline"-button you can see a little gray button which is supposed to represent a balance (in the red skin it's still the old mark right now - maybe it will change later). If you click on it under one of your own posts, a little window will pop up to tell you how many points you have. You'll also be able to see if that particular post has been approved or disapproved of, since every approval and disapproval (with their comments) will appear in the popup window.
Another way to check your points in in your user control panel. You'll see he amount of points you have + the last five fifteen persons who rated you. (changed end June 2003 - thanks Danny)
.
A rating is positive if it's been represented by a green bubble .
.
It is neutral when the bubble is gray (the person rating you has not enough posts or reputation to give or take points).
.
It is negative when the bubble is red .
.
if you click on the "balance" (or the "v/x"-mark ) under a post of someone else, again a little window will pop up - but now you'll be able to choose between "I approve of this post" or "I disapprove". You cannot choose the amount of points you give or take away. That depends on several other things:
.
on the amount of POSTS you have. If you have a lot of posts, you'll give (or take!) a lot of points... if you have at least some reputation.
.
on the amount of REPUTATION POINTS you have. If you don't have any reputation at all (ie: your bubble is gray or red) you won't be able to give points. If you have a lot of points, you'll give (or take!) a lot of points... if you have at least some posts.
.
on seniority: the longer you're a member, the more points you'll be worth.
.
There is still a lot of guessing in this, since it is not always clear why some people give so much more than others...
This is what webmaster WTA_amanda has said about it:
"Your reputation is also built up by how long you've been a member, the amount of posts you make, and a few other hidden factors like kissing up to adminstrators and moderators for example." An admin is able to rate without "spreading"- or "24 hours"-limitations... but he'll be giving only 10 50 points each time (see also "About restrictions") correction (July 2003): this has been changed from 10 to 50 points.
.
the amount of points you can take away (by disapproving of a post) is only about half of what you would give (by approving)
.
About comments: giving them, looking them up...:
when somebody rates you, you will be able to see which post s/he rated (or rather: to which thread the rated post belongs), when (date and time) s/he rated it, and who it was. You'll also see their comment - if they made one. You can see this info in your user cp. There is one restriction: you'll only see the last five fifteen... so if you receive a lot of reps while you're not aware of it (or while you're not around...) you may have missed a lot of your approvers/disapprovers... (Since this changed end June 2003 from five to fifteen, it's less probable you'll miss a lot of comments - thanks Danny!)
when rating somebody you can leave them a little comment. (You don't have to leave your name: it will automatically be attached.)
you can click on the rated thread, that will take you to the post that was rated...
.
About restrictions:
As far as I know, there are three restrictions in rating:
you cannot rate the same post more than once
.
you cannot rate the same person again unless you have "spread some reputation around" first - meaning, you have to rate others first (last report said 20, and 20 it is - thanks Toon)
.
you can rate only 11 posters in 24 hours (again: thank you Toon); after that you'll have to wait till you're able to rate again...
An admin can rate without the "spreading" and "24 hours"-limitations... but he'll never give much (only 10 50 points...) correction (July 2003): this has been changed from 10 to 50 points
.
green dots & comments: when do they change:
note: some ppll (Mac-users?) don't see the comments
normally they pop up when you hold your mouse-arrow over the green (or gray or red) dots
100 pnts needed for each new dot
=> 50 pnts needed for a new comment
1 green dot: 1 to 100 points points
1 to 50 "is on a distinguished road"

... to 550 "is a glorious beacon of light"
551 to 650 "is a a name known to all"

9 green dots: 1101 to 1300 points
... "has much to be proud of"
10 green dots: 1301 to 1500 points
... to 1500 "has much to be proud of"
11 green dots: > 1500 points
=> no new dots to be had
1501 to 2000 "has a brilliant future"
=> comment stays the same till 2000

=> this is the end of the line

James 4:11
11Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?
I'm not telling you this to judge you Ned, I'm telling you this because of this verse;
Proverbs 9:9
9 Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still;
teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning.

I'd have to agree with you there. I've got a feeling he's one of these juvenile people who get a kick out of pretending they're from this or that religion just to slander it ("Oh look, people think I'm religious and now they're all angry at these types!!1!L0llolololl")

It's a pity people have such a poor understanding of Christianity that he needs someone to go around pointing out why he's an idiot, but either way good on ya, mate! Just be careful if you are gonna quote something from the bible, it's often more complex than most people realise (mainly due to ancient linguistics and context) :)

Can you rephrase that question
Number of rep points you can give depends on

I'd still like to see the memberlist ordered by rep on display - but I've noticed that the memberlist is no longer linked to from the top nav bar.
Personally I think it could get people competing to get their ranking on such a list increased by being helpful - heck, I actually check my own position, and I don;t even consider myself competitive. :)

And to answer this question: No. But privately you did what you always do - assumed (incorrectly again) that it was me and anonymously red-repped me "back", right?
I have redded you, but not as much as you have redded me and your mysterious friend who we both know who it is. get over yourself Minnie and don't assume others are stupid. Things have gotten better but at one point you and your little group have used repping as a form of trying to intimidate or moderate in here so that you could help your "one other member" friend spam his site over and over again. That is what I'm tired of, the games and intentions behind it all.

I don't care how it's spelt Minnie, it's you who is the one. Red repping people drive by style and then pretending that assumptions would be unsubstanciated. Then you seem to get on people about linking to their sites acting like the forum spam patrol and at the same time you help your anonymous friend spam his site more than anyone else here has gotten away with it. That is where hypocricy is. Sure, Minnie, run now. Try to keep your face. You should also take a long hard look in the mirror before you project onto others what you don't like about yourself.
And here is that thread: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=17400&page=9
The glory days of AnthonyCea and Minstrel
How low life can go, huh Minnie? Looking at you and AC in there ... embarrassing is a true understatement.
I know the rest of this forum is already bored
This is actually related to the topic. Somehow. Sure some people are bored, but others will see how you have just lied and get to see one thing: No matter how some people deny to be the ones doing it, unfortunately you can't always take their words as long as cowards like Minstrel are trolling around.
What a waste of time:
No. But privately you did what you always do - assumed (incorrectly again) that it was me and anonymously red-repped me "back", right?

No you haven't actually - you've just assumed you have.

Minstrel, I was just wondering why you just repped me negatively for my above posts.
after I had just caught him do it when no other member was around.
His answer:
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=17400&page=7
Why, Toots?
1. you're an idiot
2. you're annoying
3. you have nothing original whatsoever yo say
4. even the unoriginal things you say flip-flop from one side to the other depoending on the thread and who it is you're trying to agree with at the moment
5. you're an idiot
Why anonyomous, Toots?
1. because I've said all this before
2. because I didn't feel like typing it all again
3. because you're an idiot
Sure I am the hypocrite here  Nice efforts trying to discredit someone else. What a waste of time ... but you shouldn't keep on lying - maybe it wasn't you who did it this time, but it was definitely your style. About me redding "your friend": what makes you think that I did? I have recently redded him and left my name when I did so. That was atfer I have just received a red mark and after clicking the link to the thread saw his name, clicked on it and it still said "giving reputation".
Sure Minnie, I'm imagining all that. Truth is that you've got caught and then admitted it, while you are cowardly mentioning me redding your friend. It's not the same thing, I have left my name. Nice detective work. That is the difference here: you deceive, I lay it out in the open. I guess people with beards do have a lot to hide
Edit: and I have not even mentioned your name in here until you came in and started your little game.

I got a greenie from Minstrel, which was very generous of him considering that I still have him on my ignore list. Maybe I should rethink that.
His advice was not to worry about the reds. I appreciate this advice and have had it from several other people. 3. you were NEVER associated with me in any way whatsoever, although you may have wanted to be - I thought you were a self-promoting sycophant from the time I first became aware you existed
4. if any one ever asked you to participate in anything, it sure wasn't me and I definitely didn't have anything to do with it - you asked me to participate in some lame-brained anti-DMOZ scheme and I politely but firmly declined
5. I'd like you to show me please where you think I slandered this forum - I'm sure I have probably said some negative things about you but I'm not making any secret of that

It's used to indicate/emphasize that the writer is aware that it is incorrect usage or spelling but that it was how the word or expression appeared in the original/cited text or statement (from the Latin term "sic" meaning "thus", apparently).

Once again: you're using offense as your best defence. Self promotion on your part was maybe not about your own sites, but "the other guy"'s who you have helped spam again and again. It doesn't matter whose site someone spams. Spam is spam. Trust me, I never felt the need to be in any clique, not here. I like this forum just the way it is. And the last group I have wanted to be in was one that contains you, your crazy friend AC, and your "no name friend" and all of the garbage that brings along with it. Do you condone your friend AC's behaviour and words? I'd be curious to get the answer on that one while I find your "Shawn should", "Shawn doesn't seem to understand" etc. posts.

sorry Minnie, but the propaganda is on you and your little click trying to gain some sort of power by mass red repping people you guys target....Good lord, Mike. You are starting to sound EXACTLY like Anthonycea. According to Anthony, I also have a huge army of red reppers out to get him.
Why is anyone wasting their time worrying and whining about rep?
Mike, Minstrel...Take your beef to PM, no one gives a shit that you guys don't like each other. Thanks.

I have an idea, I will just red rep Shawn
Your too worried about rep - and that is exactly why the rep system doesnt work - you and a few friends can move you up and others down. Total BS.
