View Full Version : User Reputation System

digitalpoint
Apr 1st 2004, 7:55 pm
I enabled the user reputation system for fun... So now you can see a user's reputation on the right side of their post header (it's the green dots that look like http://forums.digitalpoint.com/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gif ).

If you like (or dislike) what someone did or posted, you can affect their reputation by voting on it with the http://forums.digitalpoint.com/images/buttons/reputation.gif icon.

If you want to disallow people from seeing your reputation, you can disable it in your user control panel.

I've gotten a chuckle out of the "pean/grunt/beserker" caste system for the number of posts you have made, but if I mouse over the "reputation" icon, I don't get the significance of the "distinguished road" - is there a movie/cultural reference I'm missing here.

Just curious,

They are all setup as the defaults right now, so I didn't set those ones. :) BTW, I ended up replacing "Administrator"... so boring. hehe

Yea, Administrator was kinda boring - nice touch Shawn.

Your setup has drop my reputation to 0 for making three entries in a row....

that is pretty harsh

It will take me 100years to restore it.........

How exactly does this work- votes or what?

digitalpoint

It's built into vBulletin, for detailed info on it, check the vBulletin manual (I only say that since I know you run a forum).

disgust
Jun 6th 2004, 4:30 pm
in my cp I see "latest reputation given" but it doesn't give any details beyond that- not who gave it, not if it was positive or negative

is this normal?

is there any way to see who has the highest reputations?

digitalpoint
Jun 6th 2004, 4:32 pm
It's anonymous, so you can't see who gave it... if it's positive, it will be green, if it's negative it's red. And if the user has less than 50 posts, and can't affect your reputation either way, it's grey.

I think we should all give Shawn a negative vote and see what happens to him.... LOL

Maybe he would start sounding like anthony if we did that. (We dont need 2 of him though!!!)

Zez,

I think your sig links are backwards. You want to make the words clickable then they act as anchor text and the SEs can use them to figure out what the page is about. So I suggests you change your sig links to look and behave like this:

Thailand Hua Hin guide (http://www.thailand-huahin.com)
Apartment for rent (http://thailandcondoapartments.thailand-huahin.com/)

What a cool system. Hopefully this will keep the bickering, which I am definitely not immune to, to a minimum.

It would be good if you could see which posts you gained negative PR on though...

(without having to go through each one to find out)...

Jun 16th 2004, 8:47 am
You can under your User control panel (at least the five most recent reputations).

How does one view other's reputation. Number of posts DEFINITELY isn't always a good indicator.

Shawn,

This reputation piece is a good idea. Kinda reminds me of eBay...
BTW, I agree with ThinkBling, number of posts may not be the best indicator. IMHO

You can't see an exact number, but you can view the memberlist, and sort it by reputation if you want.

SEbasic

I know that, but I have had 11 comments, and only one of them is showing in my controll panel...

One question I don't see answered here:

If you go into your CP, you can see green votes, red votes, and "blue-ish" votes. I get the first two -- what does that "blue-ish" vote signify?

T0PS3O
Oct 5th 2004, 7:55 am
Good question. I was wondering the same since I now have one of each. They don't correlate with the user comments. Perhaps it's that member's reputation?

Edit: Looking at it again, I only have 5 blues. For some reason poeple went apeshit rating one post of mine, yesterday morning:

.:.PR5, PR4, PR3 Links ... 10-04-2004 09:21 AM
.:.PR5, PR4, PR3 Links ... 10-04-2004 09:05 AM

.:.PR5, PR4, PR3 Links ... 10-04-2004 08:27 AM
.:.PR5, PR4, PR3 Links ... 10-04-2004 08:08 AM

I think a comment should be mandatory. This isn't really useful. Now I don't know whether it was approved or not, nor do I know what those people thought of my post and I guess that this feedback is exactly what it was designed for, to self-control these communities I guess...

digitalpoint
Oct 5th 2004, 8:19 am
The blue (actually grey) means it was a vote, but they didn't have any reputation changing power.

But I thought you can't give votes to the same person without 'spreading some around'. Looking at the timeline, he must have spread some around between us over the course of at least an hour then. I thought one of his threads was about how busy he was... Oh well, his votes are blue anyway :D Guess he wasted that time.

I've noticed (and this is a general human behavior as well) that people usually only give someone a negative reputation if it's a post that they don't like... for example, ones that call all of us sheep! ;)

Oh, and I received a few reputation non-changers from what appears to be PRBot as well. Not surprising.

digitalpoint

Well then you should change that... :) Give reputation when you see a good post too (I do).

I have been... though only when they are witty or somehow profound & very informative. If it's someone saying "I agree" or just being silly, I don't. But the post must stand out.

I will start leaving comments when I give rate people's posts as well.

For me, negative ones will go to spam, illogical rants, and simply immoral posts. (Haven't seen any of the latter yet.)
