Anyone got any tips / ideas on how to improve my link popularity in Google?
As it says I have 1,186 for Yahoo, but only 16 for Google. (According to http://www.datasoftsystem.com/link-popularity.php)

According to google themselves, the best way to get links and boost your link popularity is to "produce compelling content that people want to link to"...
of course, depending on what you're selling, or what your site relates to, finding ways of getting people to link to you can be tough.
Getting inbound links from directories, articles, blogs, and link exchange with other web masters will all help you to boost the number of links.
There are also schemes like Co-op, which produce inbound links, why not sign up for that if you haven't already?

... and time consuming!
Try adding signature to your accounts on the forums too.

That is true. You can do a search on google for www.domainname.com & you will get a list of sites that link to www.domainname.com

I get annoyed at the amount of links google show.
For like 5 months I have always had 4 links on google. Then for the first time in a long time, it went to 9. 3 days later down to 4 again.

But then we get into the duplicate content rules.

Here's what you do. Write 3 500 - 1000 word articles on your site. Include a link to your site in the article somewhere. Pay $49 for some company to "blast" the article all over the net. everywhere it lands will create a backlink.
This creates 50 to 60 good backlinks each time you do it.
Its quick...
It's reletivly easy...
And it dosent take much time....
Prefect huh? :)
Enjoy!

I Agree. Link Baiting is really helpful. Directory submission is one of the best ways to improve link popularity IMO.

How ironic. After submitting to 1000 directories over 12 months. My opinion is now after spending 500$ or so on submissions, paid and free. Directory submissions is one of the worst ways to improve link populatiry IMO. :)

Agreed, but you can check it from yahoo.
BTW: the nofollow links will be counted by yahoo.

With that proportion of links not showing, I'd guess that the links you have are in general not counted as 'quality' by google. Google will always show less links then MSN or Yahoo, but the usual percentage is more along the lines of 10:100 instead of 1:1000.

there is no different way to increase link popularity in google , its the same but google considers link age .i.e. from how long your link is placed and on that they consider back links.
thank you
