View Full Version : Google's days are numbered as a Search Engine

In all honesty, I believe Google’s days are numbered especially with the new Wiki search engine that is coming up. Wiki foundation will have a human edited search engine and that will dominate the web for many years to come. The only problem is how long it will take to develop such a search engine.
However, I believe Google’s pay per click model will remain viable for a long term, primarily because they actually send checks and accept all members. I see no competition and it is difficult to compete in the pay per click arena. Plus I personally believe Google Adsense rocks. The only problem is the click fraud issue. You can get penalized even if you did not do anything, Guess you just have to be careful.

A search engine that is completely human edited? Yea that wont be biased.
I highly doubt googles days as THE top search engine are #ed. They will be #1 for at least another decade IMO.

Google is a word every single person knows... it's not going to get beaten by Wiki.

Google is going to rule for now. Not even yahoo is able to clone their adwords/adsense model. They have been trying a lot with their "Project Panama". Lets see. I would love to see some competition to google as I don't like their "No explanation" Bans.
Some abuse the policies and deserve to be banned.
I've never been banned ever. But, would like to see them explain themselves better.

What makes you think wiki will be any better than google? Talk about biased and slanted! Wiki is already managed by control freaks. I'll take my chances with google's algo, thank you. It may be crazy, but at least it's crazy towards everyone.

I liked the title of this thread - engaged people to participate. Google days numbered as SE, we all techie/geeks know that is not happening anytime soon. But it turns out that the title is quite catchy :)

Well for those who disagree you know what no one thought Yahoo’s days were numbered a while back but then I went to Britannica during High School years and boom, I see a goolge ad, click on it and there I was telling the whole school about this new search engine and before our eyes Yahoo was dead.
So you see, saying they won’t be beaten by wiki is false. Why because Wiki can give visitors much more detailed and targeted results then google. Human edited. Better results. It takes only a few visitors to spread the word like wildfire. Think about it. I get targeted results I tell at least 10 friends and relatives who pass on the word. Trust me I saw it with Google, it spreads like wildfire. And it will happen with Wiki. I guarantee it.

Yeah, I would never put my pages on #1 of the search results if I were an editor .... besides google already has 'the human touch' with quality control personnel.
BTW I am waiting to see a wiki spider :)

You cant ever compare yahoo with google. I know personally I never thought "Yahoo will never get beaten at the search engine game".
I will never use a completely human edited search engine, BIAS SUCKS. There is ABSOLUTLY NO WAY it will return better results then google does currently. Granted google isnt perfect they do a pretty damn good job keeping up with Billions of websites. How are humans going to edit and view billions of pages? Its not feasible.
The only thing that will encapture Google's market is a revolution in the current way we find information, perhaps something along the lines of video search.

Google already beat a search engine that was human edited - Yahoo. Yahoo turned to Google's method of indexing because the human method couldn't compete.
A human edited search engine can not keep tabs on the latest and greatest like a robotic one.
If you think a human edited search engine is really more effective go and use the Yahoo directory or DMOZ to find your sites.

Just because your hunch in past turned out sort of true doesn't mean this one too will be on the same perimeter. Yahoo is not dead, it is still there. However G definitely offers better results and because all the money it made - the hoopla after dot cum burst made G stand out as a super hero of .com's.
Speaking of Search results, most of the search results I encountered during Christmas season were SEO fabricated - and a lot of results were irrelevant of what I wanted.
Wiki is a great idea of collecting information - it is like open source of information (just like open source software - keeps getting better and better). Any industry that is open source helps evolving great products but from my observation - how many mainstream users use Linux as OS? It is still Windows or Mac. So how soon will this Wiki search catch up?
And you are speaking of G's days are numbered!

Google will be fine so long as competition is unable to keep up, which is what we have today. Wikipedia is good for referencing information much like an encyclopedia. Google handles much more.

Wiki doesn't have the financial resources compared with Yahoo and MSN, let alone Google, they will never catch up .... if they start to come good on search Google will probably buy them with some loose change in their pocket

people think that something that is inherently inferior is actually superior. Wiki can't be superior because they will be biased, talk about taking the internet away from the people. This is the same bullshit that is going on with apple's over pcs with windows on it, in no way is an apple machine superior until they let you put osx on any pc. The way it is now we already have choice in what type of pc to buy and google has done a pretty good job of being fair. I can't imagine a world in which wiki and apple ruled.......

Google is more of an avertising company than a search engine (at least considering the last few years.) Once they figure out more viable ways to sell advertising outside of traditional methods, they will let their search engine burn in hell. They are trying to go into print and radio advertising and even though they have not had much success yet, they have lots of time and money to find it. Also, it is widely speculated that the future of online media is video and Google had the largest market share after their YouTube acquisition. Once they figure out a way to extract the content of the videos and plaster contextual advertising all over them, they will contibue to lead. Video is something that Wiki-search won't do. Did I also mention that Google is in the process of scanning all books they can find? Can a Wiki come anywhere close to such large amount of information? Not likely.
Hmm, I guess Google's search engine will be around for a long time still.
Cheers!

guys stop the crap....wiki taking over google? wiki depends on google for most of its traffic....wiki has to ask for funds to stay alive...please...the reason why google rose to the number 1 search engine is because they have unbiased results...how can a human edit search engine beat google??? how are they going to decide who is number 1?

it would be interesting to know how much wiki was worth if it weren't nonprofit, I've seen Jimbo Wales quoted as saying that was the dumbest and the smartest thing he ever did. (maybe the smartest because that is the reason for its success?)

It is worth nothing. The day wiki makes a proffit will be the day content publishers line up in a queue to kick wiki.
Many people have constantly complained (espically authors) of getting ripped off by wikipedia, people "google" for information and then copy/paste it onto wiki and "wiki fy" it.
Wiki is "biased" and is authored by teenagers. Encylopedia Britanica is authored by a review board, with written permission from original authors.
And please dont give me this crap about "britanica has as many errors as wikipedia" blah blah blah. An acedemic will not trust a master thesis baised on wikipedia articles no matter how many you cross reference.
Besides why do we need wiki?
Google indexes what we write on the internet, just like whats written on wikipedia. Not only that your not limited to one perspective but thousands of them, google provides access to forums with debate, blogs with articles about the topic, pod casts, videos of thoes subjects and pictures.
The only reason to have wikipedia is that many people have read these articles and journalize them into a center database. Long live semantic web which has the ability to do just that automatically from thousands of already existing articles on the internet.
So, wikiseek will never be a good search engine. Also how can you justify saying the search engine of a single website is better than having access to millions of other websites?
Besides theres nothing interesting or different in wikiseek, they could of saved themselves the bother by making a google co-op search engine for wikipedia which ranks articles far better wikiseek.

I agree, that most of the content on wiki is copied from everywhere(or just original content rewrote by a hack writer losing relevant details and bungling facts), and I think its quite refreshing to see someone else who doesn't think wiki is the end all be of all websites.

Also, wikiseek is only for wikipedia itself or sites mentioned in wikipedia.
It's not for any other website.
The contents of Wikiseek are restricted to Wikipedia pages and only those sites which are referenced within Wikipedia, making it an authoritative source of information less subject to spam and SEO schemes.
So don't think it'll ever overtake google or any other search engine.
Even doubt that it'll become something that a lot of people will use.

Diether is right...wikiseek is only a search engine for wikipedia content, so they're not even on the same playing field.
The only reason why wikipedia grew so big is because of Google. Google is the king of search, and the only one that seems to show unbiased results. All the other search engines are too damn busy worrying about money and competition to get good results.

If this was true then DMOZ would be the top of the hill. True they don't have a SE but everything is human edited. It was hot for a while and everyone wanted it the directory, but how long has it been down( may be back up now) and nothing has really changed as a result.
I don't see Googel going any where as a result of Wiki Search. Wiki Search will be useful, but I don't tihnk it will be everything. Plus lets think about something. Why is Wiki so popular anyway. Is it because its just great or is it because Google gives it top spots for a lot of Searches. One tweak of Google's index would totally take Wiki out of the public eye.

Google's days are numbered as a Search Engine
Rubbish!
There's not one search engine within a million miles of providing quality results and referrals that Google provides. MSN & Yahoo are a waste of time, with their pathetic attempt at a search engine.

I don't think google's search engine will be "shut down" or over-powered or anything like that soon. Google is one of the most used search engines, and people won't just stop using it just because there's a new Human-edited search engine coming out soon.
However, I do beleive that Google just being known as a search engine to regular everyday people is numbered.

A wiki-ish directory might compete with dmoz or yahoo dir but never with a true search engine. The mass of pages in their db is too much for any team of editors to ever tackle.
If you want to talk about the downfall, check out meta-search engines like jux2.com These guys provide much better results but they rely on google, msn, etc to provide their results. Might be a vicious circle of dependency.

search engines provide content on a whole other level of detail than wiki, with a small amount of editors, if anything maybe you can say social sites can grow to googles size, think of user search engine contribution on the scale of myspace.

Yep, I agree. A human edited search engine would rock. However, it would take an enormous amount of resources and the sites update speed would be very slow.
