just played with the relatively new se icerocket.com (http://www.icerocket.com/)

I'm adicted .....

They have integrated some very nice features like thumbnail of site (so empties etc are easily spotted) Alexa info (for whatever it's worth) but what I find bril is the 40% quick view in search that realy saves time as it is easy to dismiss crap... oh yes and some positioning from other se's.....

Results are OK - IMHO better than G not as good as Y at the moment.

The link isn't working, yuo spelled it with an s.

The thumbnail is only of the root which isn't very helpful really.

The search is slow compared to G but image search is pretty fast. It seems to be geared toward US use though, no country shortlisting. Funny how it looks just like G and MSN, it certainly is THE industry standard layout now.

It serves up results relevant enough it seems.

Here is another one serving up from different SE's:

Yeah Shawn, those IceRockets get a lot of press on DP, maybe you should send the links to Mark Cuban, he may want to fund some of us here. Can you send him a link to my sites while you are at it? :D

So how much traffic does a site have to get before it gets thumbnailed?

So how much traffic does a site have to get before it gets thumbnailed?

It might be done in the same way as shawn has, or maybe hotlnking the alexa images.

I guess that it is a case of as and when you are spidered rather than how much traffic you get.

The one Shawn uses is girafa.com. Not so familiar on the service but did take a quick look for some ideas on our new SE. If you find anything out about ACTUAL pricing, it would be great.

I just checked something on icerocket - A site that I haven't touched for months is at #1.

I then checked Y! and M$N... It's at #4 (For the phrases it was designed for)...

The site is a MESS. HTML tags spewing out. Dead links to all the images - a REAL REAL mess.

Just thought it was funny...

or maybe the competition is just finding out what HTML stands for?

Icerocket's thumbnail of my site is my splash page, no matter how deep the indexed page is. The problem is that my splash page's only content is "select the language you want to visit the site in" with a big image. This page doesn't look like the rest of the site and has not real content. Any way I can force it to use my English home page instead?

Thanks,

Dji-man

The icerocket results haven't been updated in eons. Many of the links are extremely out of date.

I did a quick search on the miserable failure (http://www.icerocket.com/search?tab=web&q=miserable+failure) term.

Look at result 6. It's a link to a query ran through Google. Maybe stuff like that is common, I've just never seen an SE return the results of another SE in it's serps like that.

Edit: I just read their "about" page:

IceRocket uses innovative metasearch technology to search the Internet's top search engines, including WiseNut, Yahoo, MSN, Teoma, Altavista, Alltheweb, Lycos, and many more.

Don't have one.... there are quite a lot of smaller engines and dirctories that may use your splash page (e.g. msn preview) ...
Java languare detection and an integrated language choice in the menu are better.

Could someone point out whats addictive about this meta search engine?

To me it just looks like any old meta search engine with Alexa snapshots :S.

Did anyone else notice this? I think it's really a great idea...

Icerocket let you create an rss feed out of it's results!

http://www.icerocket.com/search?tab=web&q=machine+guns++site%3Awww.army-technology.com&rss=1&id=e771086e8babb15e1bc16b92da2c768f

Gives me a live rss feed that... I guess*... I can publish that wherever I like?

Cool!

the quickview thing is kinda cool - too bad the sites can't be compressed into the frame so you actually view it.

you mean an RSS reader.
Opera has one built in.

I like icerocket, its not perfect but its reasonably inovative

It looks like to me the results are the exact same as in google. I do however like the thumbnails. The site is also easy on the eyes, but it looks like google results copied for my real estate market and its primary key phrase.

The results are actually different.
I also like killerinfo.com

Yeah, those thumbnails are pretty nice! Easy to sort through what you want to see.
