View Full Version : How I lost $45 at PayPal

YIAM
Jan 17th 2007, 8:59 am
Another paypal s** Story.

I had requested withdrawal on 10th December 2006 of amount 1k:) . Normally paypal issues check within 4-6 days. But even after 10 days my status was showing "Processing" and I mailed them. They replied me but there was no relation between my problem and their answer. I keep mailing them and got same reply.

After 47 days, Today they refunded amount to my account. It was full refund but I lost $45:eek: just for exchange rate difference.

Cost of one and half months Waiting = -$45

Now here more info how paypal s** and make us fool.

When they refunded they shows transcation rate:

Exchange Rate: 1 Indian Rupee = 0.0220379 U.S. Dollars

That is equal to INR 45.37637434 = 1 U.S. Dollars

Here is 100s of Indian PayPal user. One question to them: Have you ever got exchange rate of 45.37637434 even 44.xx

Well, I have requested another withdrawal just within 2 hours of their refund and now look at the exchange rate:

Exchange Rate: 1 U.S. Dollar = 43.1357 Indian Rupees

The exchange rate difference in 5%. And no such thing happend in this world that exchange rate will change by 5% in two hours.

They are earning 5% just from exchange rates?

Paypal sure do suck, but if you are a frequent ebayer, people there only accept Paypal 99% of the time, so in a way we're forced to use it.

Just out of interest, what other decent alternatives do we have?

First of all u did a mistake... its lately happening that processing status are taking time to change. But they do change if not after 10 days but for sure after 20 days.

One needs to wait when you know all/most of indian pp users are facing this problems.

Not, 10, 20, 30 or 40 days, its 47 days. I got check which was requested on 27th December.

I think they have some technical problem and check was not issued at all.

But what will you say about their transaction rate???

5% difference in two hours

Have you ever get transaction rate like Rs 45.xx/USD

PayPal has so many fraudsters that it hurts. Unfortunately, their API is soooo easy to use that it makes good business sense for us to use it in the short term until our coders get our online merchant account into the mix. Sigh... I love chargebacks...

If you see the Fees page at http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees-outside which was something you agreed upon when you used Paypal, it states that they will tag on a 2.5% fees to the exchange rate as part of the cross border transactions.

If your transaction involves a currency conversion, it will be completed at a retail foreign exchange rate determined by PayPal, which is adjusted regularly based on market conditions. This exchange rate includes a 2.5% spread above the wholesale exchange rate at which PayPal obtains foreign currency, and the spread is retained by PayPal. The specific exchange rate that applies to your multiple currency transaction will be displayed at the time of the transaction.

As to why your request for check payment was rejected, it is difficult to determine from your information, you might want to check with Paypal as to why it was not accepted.

What is strange and sad is we can do nothing about it nor go legal against it.
Is paypal not bound by any laws?

Lately even I have started feeling very very unsure about using paypal.

Your experience just added to my shock.

Hope everything settles down soon for you.

To clarify:
Xoom doesn't work anymore, it used to but it doesn't any more. They don't process intra-india transactions & they check your paypal account's country (this is how they find out). Remit2india (http://remit2india.com) is a cheap & fast way to get paypal funds if you know someone in the US who is willing to let you use their identity & ssn.

while I am sympathetic to your situation, you need to understand that buy/sell exchange rates always different. You can not buy $ at xx.xx and sell at same price (no one will do such transaction with you).

The exchange rate changes everyday. I have been using paypal since more than 3 years now & have been withdrawing money every month. Have never ever faced issues with them. Yes me and YAIAM who faced the same problem have suffered a lot because of this unprofessional act of Paypal. I have lost another $25 due to this cancellation of the cheque that they themselves did after processing my cheque for more than 38 days.
Now should I request a cheque again ?

I think all those who suffered at the hands of paypal should get together and collectively take legal action against them.

That will surely help paypal into more ethical business practices.

Paypal is leader and millions of people all over world are using it. Also paypal have forced somewhat to used it (eg- ebay users). I am seeing that other guys are also becoming famous slowly, if paypal do not correct these issues, I guess the number paypal users will decrease.

Nothing is secure on the Internet.

Internet is also a home of frauders and hackers.

So, we have to generate any secure method to stop this all.
Also, some strong action against companies.(paypal, moneybrookers etc.)

Last month I got a e-mail(fraud) from paypal. the site is same as to as paypal site and e-mail if from enquiry@paypal.com.

I think its from paypal. e-mail is asking me for my login info. then I see it deeply and found its fraud e-mail. becoz with that e-mail I have no acc.
I am also a webmaster. So, found it easily.

But a layman can be easily foolish with this types of scams.

Due to all this mostly peoples afraid to use CC. Otherwise Internet business becomes double. If we find any secure and gurenteed way. then Internet business becomes double or triple.

Paypal has a debit card. DOn't they provide it to people outside US?
If yes, then use the debit card to withdraw money. Fee is $1.5 per transaction.
There is also a 1.5% cashback if you use it as credit

They allready charges 3.4% + $0.30 USD for receivin payment. No problem with that.

They also charges 5$ for check withdrawal + 2.5% currency exchange. No problem with that too.

But They did not issue my check, and after 47 days they refund the amount to my paypal account. They also refunded $5 but deducted 2.5% currency exchange charge again.

So, I lost 5% i.e. $45=Rs. 2K for their fault.

Anyway, I am happy today because my second withrawal showing "Check Issued" status today. If it does get lost in air then I will get it soon.

is there anyone else that can offer such a service as they do?
