I am very interested in directories but i am a total beginner. here are some basic questions i had about improving ones directory.

1) Whats the best way to get backlinks on your directory?

2) When you go to google.com and enter site:websitename.com you receive this description Results 1 - 10 of about xx,xxx from websitename.com (0.19 seconds) What is that a calculating or measuring?

3) Also related to the previous question, is this number important to the quality of the site? What purpose does it serve?

4) Another relative question to the google search... I was playing around with the site:websitename.com search and noticed that if you capitalize certain letters in the domain name it yields different results? Does anyone know what causes that or why this happens?

Example being site: Directorydeluxe.com & site:directorydeluxe.com

5) For any website with a pagerank higher than 1, will the pagerank go down if no further marketing efforts are made? will the website sustain its pr once its there?

1. Announce your site at directory listing sites like vilesilencer and here. Submit to directories. Use a sig link.
2. Number of pages indexed from that site
3. It just means that when people search for stuff that there is a better chance your site will be found, and also that the pages listed have some value with regard to backlinks
4. No idea
5. Not necessarily. It sort of depends on how much traffic and updateing you do as well.

is 34k indexed pages decent or not too good?

btw, thanks for your quick response :)

The number of pages indexed means nothing if the pages are in supplemental results. And yes if you do not keep the links that you have pointing to the site then the page rank will go down. If you can keep all the links you had before and gain some new ones as well then your site will do just fine.

Getting backlinks from other directories and blogs is a good way to start out your directory.

do you mean to say that you have to check up on submitted listings to see if the websites are still up and running?

I can not think of a site right off the top of my head. But if you search for site in this fashion example site:www.whatever.com *** it will show you how many pages are in the supplemental results. If you see the word Supplemental Results at the end of the url then that means those pages are in supplemental.

Page rank is based on links that point to the site, it does not matter if the site has listings or not. A directory could have a pr 6 with no listings what so ever.

It may help you later if those pages gain pagerank in the future.
Just make sure you did not get all those links with an automated tool.
I assume these are "external" links.
