View Full Version : "Mistype" Domains Worth Having?

If I was, for example, to acquire 9orbitz.com (and I'm only using this as an example, and chose it since the 9 is next to the "o" ) would I get a decent amount of traffic because of mis-types? Might that make a decent click-through site to travel links? Also, since "orbitz" is part of the domain name, would they have a right to take the site from me? Would they bother?

Maybe for all 4 questions, especially the last 2.

By far the most helpful post I've seen anywhere on DP. Maybe.

Wow... what happened here? It's like this was a chat board for people who all thought they were going to win the lottery... but things went south. Look alive people! Have an opinion! And I mean that in the nicest way possible... and I'm sorry about the lottery. :)

You have to try it yourself. See how many times you and your friends would type it wrong that way.
ie., I sometimes type Gogole instead of google. Again, it's all about psychology. You must do some live experiment to find out about what you are asking.

Well, I was assuming there were people in here who owned a domain which is a "mis-type" site. I understand the physics involved :) I was just wondering if people, in general, think they're a waste of time.

Alien said it best. You have to try for yourself. I read some advice somewhere before that suggested opening up your favorite spreadsheet program (OpenOffice.org Calc) and type a domain name over and over again, not as fast as you can, but relatively quick, seperating them by hitting the ENTER key. Don't think about mistyping the name or typing it correctly. Every time, just pretend you are an everyday user who is about to visit Orbitz for the millionth time. After a few minutes, go to the data menu, and sort the list. Find the ones that show up the most, and check them for availability.

Or you can use the Domain Research Tool. It generates typos and then allows you to check it for overture w/ extension. A free alternative online typo tool is located here: http://ovthistory.com/typos.html
