Okay, I have a site that completely sucks for content, links, h1 tags, all that good seo junk you hear people go on and on about for days. Don't get me wrong, all that is needed when trying to get rankings in Google.
Here is what I have found out for Yahoo with a personal site of mine.
Yahoo heavily favors keywords in your .com. Yes, you will be ranked higher then most without it but a good solid site with back links, age, content, h1 tags, blah blah will out rank you.
Title tags. Solid keywords in your title tag. The first keyphrase in my title tag I rank VERY high for, and it's a keyphrase a lot of websites go for.
My personal site has NO content, poorly omptimized, and lack of back links.
Here is what I have found out for Yahoo with a business site I do work for.
Age, age, age, age. WOW! The domain is from 1998 and is ranking for some NICE keywords.
http://local.yahoo.com/ -- Get your business listed there.
Solid links from old domains. This site has about 11-20 links. They are all from
relative sites with old domains.
The business I do work for is just a small town business. They don't get many sales. Their old website was just trash. Horrible navigation, very little content, lack of contact information, ect. All this time they have been losing sales. They are a small town business but rank or solid STATE keywords, in surronding states.
In conclusion, get rankings in Yahoo isn't too hard.
1) keywords in title tags and/or domain name.
2) Have an older domain.
3) List your business in Y! Local
4) Get solid relative back links from older domains.
Oh, and to everyone that says "Yahoo doesn't bring much traffic" ... It brings in quite a bit. I have noticed more older people use Yahoo/altavista.
Good luck!
