I've read a couple of threads about hosting but, understandably, its all US based companies.
Anybody know of a good cheap UK hosting company?

Why? You can use a Canadian host
http://www.diyhosting.ca/
as reseller - they are cheap and good :)

you may think not to go for a US hosting company but all our sites are based in the US as bandwidth there is cheap. We used to have all our sites on UK providers but now we have two hosting companies, 1 UK (their servers based in US) and the other is a US company.
check hostdetective.net for some good consumer reviews on hosting companies.

But if the site is hosted in the USA or elsewhere doesn't that mean it won't appear in SERPS when i do a "pages from the UK" search in Google etc. or am i talking crap (wouldn't be the first time):)

UK sites targeting UK surfers really need to be hosted in the UK for anything competitive.
A host I can personally recommend is www.clook.net - they remain surprisingly cheap, but are a very solid company with superb support.

Is it proven that the physical location of a server in the UK will be of benefit to UK specific searches?
For the prices clook are charging it could well be worth me getting yet another hosting account for a UK specific site.

Thought so but thanks for confirming it.
clook.net looks impressive and very reasonable. I've sent off for some more information regarding their reseller packages.

clook.net doesn't support ASP or Access etc as its on linux so any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

.
Its been proven to benefit but you can make up for it in other ways if you have no other choice.
I, Brian is correct though that if you can, you should host UK targeted sites in the UK.

Bob hi there,
I am doing the same research now. I have been recommended to have a look at Webhostingtalk. On this site I have found an advert from pghostinguk.com. They meet your requirements for ASP / MS Access (i've got the same requirements as well). They also have PHP support (which I need).
They look very cheap to me and maybe I will give it a try.
