Isn't it true that it only costs money for commercial websites to be listed on the yahoo directory and it should be free for non commercial websites? So wouldn't that mean that my site www.re-talk.com should be able to be submitted to the yahoo directory for free?

That depends I guess on whether Yahoo Directory Editors deem a forum that runs ads to be commercial. If you were truely a not for profit organisation that provides essential services to the community or if you were a political party or organisation than that would probably give you a greater chance of getting listed.

I've seen websites that earn revenue by ads but don't sell a clear-cut product/service with mutiple, free listings... I'm really curious about how this works, because I have a site that meets that description that I submitted to as a non-commercial property and it hasn't been approved (submitted 1 month ago) even though it has no ads at all.

If its non-commercial then also the most things depend on the editors over there.

I am agree with other people that a non-comercial site must be placed in dir under suitable category but you have to check the yahoo guidelines and contact to editor to get your site listed.
Best of luck

Your website is commercial, because your place some Ads at the bottom. You can go to yahoo directory and find out what's their description for non commercial websites. The decision of whether a site is commercial or not is made by yahoo editors.

It depends on the editor of Yahoo actually. But for less than $300 isn't really bad for a PR5/PR6 link from Yahoo directory for 1 year.

unless your site is on page one of your category, the link won't be from a pr5 page will it?

adding your site to yahoo directorys its very hard as there are never ending catogories or the proper place that you want to add your site to

dose not matter how deep you digg to find the correct catogorie by searching and if you do find where to place your site there is no gauranteed that it will be listed for free

Over the past two years I've applied for a free listing in Yahoo's directory at least 6-8 times. No success, and mine is an entirely noncommercial, nonprofit website. In fact, on the home page we specifically say we will not accept any donations, either. It's a well-written PR5 site, but I simply cannot seem to get the Yahoo free listing, although we appear to qualify in every way.
