I have a site that ranks in the top 20 in both yahoo and msn for a phrase that is searched a lot but doesn't even rank in the top 1000 on google. Any ideas on how to improve my google ranking?

Google took longer to index my pages too. First MSN was the search engine that gave me the most visitors, then Yahoo came in, and a year later they both backed down and I received higher positions on G.
So you might have to wait for a while, but it's worth it in the end.

So you wait about a year when you create your page to get higher rank on google?

The general rule is that first comes MSN, then Yahoo and then finally Google. Its really not hard to get a good SERP in MSN and Yahoo as they rely quite heavily on backlinks. Google however has a more complex method for working out website importance as well as assessing the age and interest that people/visitors have in your site.

Its good that your getting results for your chosen keywords although the obvious question is: is anyone searching for a company such as yours using those keywords/phrases?

Check out http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ and http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/ and find out if people really are searching for what you think are the most appropriate keywords. Chances are they aren't. The obvious way of checking is to get a stats program installed on your server - if you have a lot of incoming visitors from search engines then you know you've got the right keywords!

Best of luck!

I actually start with the sitemap ..with the google webmaster tool and MAKE sure it is perfect in there system and to VERIFY the site ( in the same spot) ..at that point google does a good job about indexing you with in 3 weeks.

There are four main keys to good Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

1. Title tags - every page needs a unique and descriptive title tag.
2. On-page content - every page needs unique, informative information that is easily read by spiders and humans alike.
3. Links - every site needs a system for building links.
4. Freshness of content - every site needs to keep their site regularly updated with fresh content that will bring humans and spiders back for more.
I have found that may help
your ranking on MSN and yahoo Search.
• MSN and yahoo places very high emphasis on good coding
• M & Y places high emphasis on keyword density
• M & Y places high emphasis on the number of inbound links
• M & Y places high emphasis on the page title
• M & Y places high emphasis on headings
• M & Yplaces high emphasis on when the content was last
updated
• M & Y places emphasis on the size of the website
• M & Y places emphasis on meta tags

About Google,
Build quality links to your site pages from other well ranked sites on
Google.
Make sure you provide quality content that have something unique to
offer and that have keywords or key phrases people might search to
find your site in Google.
Optimize you web site pages by making sure your top keywords appear
in your title, meta tags and content.

If you sell products, give something away free (The word "free" is one of the top most searched words on the internet).

Keep a track of your listings/ranking in Google and analyze it periodically. Some google tips on this:

Indexed Pages: To know which pages on your site are listed in the google and to see how they will appear to google searchers type site:wwwdotyourdomainnamedotextn in the google search box.

Link Popularity: To keep a track of sites that link to you (and also see their google page rank), type link:wwwdotyourdomainnamedotextn in the google search box.

 slow down guys.

This guy is using black hat SEO strategy.
At the footer of his site you can see that he is having some hiden text:
We Specialize in Charlotte Moving, North Carolina Moving, Moving Services, Moving Truck, Moving, Moving supply, moving help, house moving, moving checklist, moving truck company, moving to charlotte, moving company charlotte north carolina, moving to Charlotte north carolina, florida moving company, moving to florida, moving to south carolina. Virginia Moving, Moving to Virginia, Moving to DC. Moving to Greenville.

So don't even think that you will be top on google because probably they will exclude you from their index.

My advice: REMOVE THAT TEXT ;)
