any idea how to get listed on http://usinfo.state.gov or ther .gov and .edu sites? I went to their site and couldn't seem to find any link to add a site. Or shall we email them, call them? Thanks

Just mail them and ask how much it is.

Maybe they linked to them voluntary, not through a link exchange. I doubt you'll get a link exchange with such a site.

can you point to the page that they're listed on? Were they a reference in an article?

Yup! You can take a look at this http://usinfo.state.gov/usa/infousa/arts/genres.htm. that is one URL my competitor has linked to. They were also able to get their sites listed to even more .gov sites like:

http://www.shrewsbury-ma.gov/schools/central/curriculum/lf7.html
http://www.tempe.gov/library/netsites/bn700.htm
http://www.sanantonio.gov/library/web/music_genres.asp
http://tvdg10.phy.bnl.gov/links.html
http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/workshops/humanities_online.htm
http://www.manchesternh.gov/CityGov/LIB/Adult/Links.html
http://www4.rcf.bnl.gov/brahms/WWW/the_other_brahms.html

any idea?

That's impressive. Sometimes these sites will link to others on their own. I noticed that a couple of them have a webmaster e-mail so why not e-mail them and see if they'll place your site also? You might get lucky but I wouldn't obsess over it. I used to try getting on .gov and .edu sites also because my competitors were linked due to student research and so on. In the end, we outrank them with regular methods. But start by e-mailing the webmaster and move on to a phone call if that doesn't work. Good luck. Please keep us posted. I'd like to know how it goes for you.

If these .edu/.gov sites link to others on their own, then maybe i should also find out their criteria. :) This competitor of mine got links from 2,850 .edu sites. And around 90 links from .edu. I can't list all of them here though as i would need to do it manually. I already started emailing some sites. I'll keep you posted.
