If so, for how long will it continue to benefit a site as far as search engine rankings go? This site has almost 20,000 (mostly unrelated) links on it.

(I put a space in it)
Thoughts?

If they have 20,000 outgoing links I'd say the help offered would be minimal.

As per Google, over 100 links on a page is not good.
All unrelated links looks more like a link farm, also bad.

Then how do large directories get by. They may be legit and not link farms.

Google advised the webmasters to stay under 100. It is obvious that they cannot penalize every site.. for example, sitepoint forum has over 500+ outgoing links on its forum page (same with other popular forums) but still receives a good PR and SERP.
