I updated my DNS for my domain yesterday afternoon, and I'm wondering how long is normal before it finishes doing whatever it's doing?

What's your registrar?
Namecheap usually takes minutes.

2-3 days, in some regions will update faster, in other regions the change will take effect later

Is there any way to track it?

Is there any way to track it?
Windows---->Start---->Run---->CMD---->ping www.domain.com
See if the ip has changed.

Although DNS updates for .com domain names have become faster since then,
it still doesn't change the possibility it could take up to 48 or even 72 hours.
Some "catch on" pretty quick, others can take a while.

The fastest I've seen happen so far was 20 seconds flat, as in I timed it. :)

Same as always: clear cache, make sure domain name has the correct DNS in
WHOIS, DNS records (A-records, MX, etc.) are configured properly, etc.

This my experience also. And that is the only good thing I have to say about registrfly. Godaddy is sloooooooooow.

It should never take more than 48 hours.

I have most of my domains with goDaddy and it usually takes 7-10 minutes for the nameservers to update......

Adrian

It depends... for yourself, because your own isp caches dns querys, you will find if you have gone to a page, and your isp has cached the dns, you will have to wait till the zone file updates at your isp, however if it a fresh lookup, your isp will contact the root server for the zone and get the new dns straight away :)

If you're in a rush for it to change for your own use - you can always add the new ip to your hosts file.

it starts almost instantly instantly but may take 0-24 hours normally depending on big giants systems, aol dns servers updates in 24 hours, I read it used to be a week for updating 10 years before, it was horrible.

I suggest u a better way, Go change only A record in your present DNS records and let your files reside on current box too, then you will never feel any delay. because its will be like HA solution in that case.

DNS update time varies vastly. You'll just have to accept whatever time it updates as the time it updates, simple as that.

Depends on your registrar, usually no more than 48 hours.

Your ISP may use cached DNS servers, so may see the old site.
Try tools like dnsstuff.com to check on its progress.

I have seen as quick as an hour and as long as 48 hours.
