Is it possible to rank high in Yahoo for a competitive term without a directory listing? I am currently #14 for my keyword. All 13 ahead of me are directory listings. I haven't budged in Yahoo for this term in several weeks even though my bl's are double what they were when I first hit #14.
Should I assume I can't go any higher for this term without a directory listing?
I am #8 in Google for this same term and would like to hit top 10 in yahoo as well.

Yes you can get #1 without a listing. Some even argue a listing will drop you in SERPs.

Yeah, I have no listing in the yahoo dir and I am doing fine. Can't say the same about google, even though I am listed at DMOZ.

Doesn't matter if you are in the directory or not . Optimise your pages and get GOOD links .
Now to your query ---
As far as Yahoo is concerned Optimise your pages . Optimise Not Stuff .

Yes. It is not clear what makes a site do well in Y! I guess doing well in the past helps a lot.

I believe Yahoo likes links, inbound links with KWs in anchor text.

Of course yahoo likes inbound links - test it. Build 2 sites and give one of them links, see which ranks higher.

Improve your links. Write some articles and list them in the free article websites. As the articles are picked up your listing should improve.

One of our sites just got into the yahoo dir via free submission page. We were stuck for months on our main key word phrase at the 40 mark in the serps. Day after our site was included in the directory it jumped up to 8. Yahoo uses the directory title and description now which i'm not thrilled about.

Yes, I am really wondering if the same would happen for me. I have been stuck at 14 for quite a while. I haven't moved up or down in a long time. I really think a directory listing would help me.

Hi ,
Ok , here's few things , do them and I am sure that you will soon rank higher .
1 - Remove the stuffing from the images ( alt tags) . You need not stuff all your services there .
2 - Add some simple text . Page looks more like a banner than a WebDesign Service . I think I know what you intend there but I told you Stuffing won't work .
3 - You do not need that Popup . What is it all about . Is that an advertisement or a service of yours that you want to emphasis upon . If a service , then Highlight it on the page instead of a POPUP .
I closed that popup before even it loaded . Most people do the same . If that is the case , then what is the use of a popup . It simply adds a Question mark on your credibility . You Talk About WEB-Design there . Right ?

Sorry to say , You have seen Many alt tags addressing the same one or two keywords . Not all Pages on the website . That is stuffing .

Hi
yes one can rank high in Y without being in the directory.
Be aware that if you go for the directory it will change your title and description in the Y SERPs.
This may or may not be helpful but it's irreversible for at least a year!

No, I am talking about stuffing every alt tag on one page with all your targeted keywords for that page. That is alt tag stuffing.
