View Full Version : How to get Google API Key
nivlek78
Mar 25th 2004, 10:32 pm
Hi all,
I am new to these forums. Can't believe I have just discovered these GREAT SEO tools.
Amazing. I especially like the Comparision tool btw WordTracker and Overture. :)
However, when I tried to signup for the Keyword Tracker Tool, it asked for a api key.
So I followed the link, created an account, verified it. However, no key was created. Instead I got an error page from google instead.
Is the key creation down or something?
Or did I do something wrong?
TIA for the help
PS: DigitalPoint, I really LOVE ur tools.

What does the error message at Google say exactly? I haven't heard of any problems getting keys so far...

the Google API is obtained form Google
http://www.google.com/apis/api_faq.html
on the left of that a.m. Google API-FAQ page you find the link to create account ( @ google ) ..
then you get your google API
and use it for the digitalpoint.com account ..

Hmmmm... I suspect it might be for everyone now that I know about it... I noticed about 1/3 of the people signed up for the keyword tracker than normally do in the last 2 days...

ive been having issues finding the API key can anyone give me a step by step in getting it
i also get this message , does it have to do with what were suppose to use
As of December 5, 2006, we are no longer actively supporting the SOAP Search API. We encourage you to use the AJAX Search API (http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/) instead.

Yes, that's right, Google are no longer handing out SOAP API keys. I'm not sure where that leaves this tool as regards new users.

I tried to sign up as a user, but had to use the AJAX key google gave me. It said:
The request returned the following error:
Exception from service object: Invalid authorization key:
I am kinda bummed. This looked like a really nice tool to use.
*(edit) I take this back, they gave me a SOAP API tool, it appeared in my email, and I didn't see it, thinking it would appear on the website itself... I guess I have both now)

This seems so simple, but after browsing around google webmaster tools, I can't seem to find my key I created before they shut it down.
I created one a year ago and now I can't seem to log in to find where it might be located.
any help?

Since Google has stopped giving new keys for the SOAP API can we use
the AJAX search API key instead?
http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/
And if so, it might be a good idea to EXPLAIN that people who want to use the keyword tracker!

I'm frustrated myself that they took it off. Seems like the AJAX Search API is meant to deprecate it.
What is the meaning of Google API Key ???
A Google SOAP Search API Key is for websites to access their Search API and make requests. Without one you can't use it.

What's the update here, is there a way for me to get the tool working or am I screwed because I don't have a SOAP API?
I used to have one but I lost it :(

Do you still have the account which you used to get the SOAP API key? If yes then check for an email from api-support@google.com with a subject of Your Google Web APIs License Key. I recently got those details from a friend which helped me to find my key. Lets see if you can find yours.

Hello everybody,
I'm new to this forum, as to SEO in general. I've been pointed to this tool from the book. I never used this Keyword Tracker, and to my understanding I'm not going to. Am I right?
Ahh, and no, I don't have that mystic Google API key.

Hello,
I just plunged into this keyword tracking world today. I've found the tool, waded through the whole acquiring an API key "thing" and have ended up receiving the "Invalid authorization key" error mentioned in this thread.
The API I now have is an AJAX API (whatever that is). From what I've read here on the forum though, this type of API may not be supported by the keyword tracking tool.
I'm logged into the tool and have added a couple of keywords, but doubt there will be any tracking as long as I'm getting this error.
Where do I go from here?
Thanks in advance.
Okay, just discovered an AJAX API distinction at the Google code site. There is an AJAX Feed API and an AJAX Search API. The first place I found to get an API turns out to be a "feed" type. It is for downloading ATOM and RSS feeds and doesn't sound like what I need for the keyword tracking tool. The AJAX Search API is for adding search functionality ("powered by Google" search field) to my site, which doesn't sound like what I need for the tracking tool either. I'm really stuck now.
Hope to hear from someone soon.
Thanks.

If you have not one then you are out of luck... at least for now.

Google has stopped issuing the API keys (http://code.google.com/apis/soapsearch/) last year, and it is unlikely they will issue anymore keys. Kind of wished I signed up for it when I had the chance.

Amazing how there is so little information out there about obtaining an API for your website. I see a lot about Google Maps and Ajax api, but not sure which one I need. Some API website guru step up and clear all this up!:) Website fun

You can only reuse the old keys. In e-bay, you can see some selling shared SOAP API keys for $40-50.
I'm selling them as well, you can contact me at calibur62000@gmail.com
APIs are not cheap. Those who are selling them at $1 are selling BASE or AJAX keys, not SOAP keys.

I just created a Google AJAX search API key, but it doesn't seem to work with the keyword tracker. It takes the key when signing up, but it says "Invalid key: [...]" when I enter a keyword.
Would be nice if the developers of this could post a paragraph there on the tool site, since apparently Google has stopped issuing the kind of key it was working with over 2 years ago..

Yes, you can use 1 API key for more then one account. It has been observed the most of the newly generated API key's wont work at all. If some one have the old API keys than u can use that. :)

Paul Siragusa is my name. I too have the same issues when trying to obtain an API key. I get lost when I get to the page with all the different choices. Then all the links seem to take me to an informational page form Google that asks if I found what I needed or not. I scour for somewhere that says something to the effect or "Get your Google API Key here" or something of that nature. But I get lost and I don't know which one I need for keyword utilities on the web that require a Google API?. And i'm fairly saavy. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Google SOAP Search APIs are no longer available read about it here!
http://code.google.com/apis/soapsearch/api_faq.html#price1
1. Does it cost anything to use the Google SOAP Search API?
No. Developers who are already using the SOAP Search API can continue to do so for free. However, please note that use of the API is limited to 1,000 queries per day to Google, and cannot be used for commercial applications. We are no longer issuing new API keys for the SOAP Search API.

Google API is things what you can implant into your website to put features such as searching Youtube and doing other queries and things what involve Google and it's partnering sites. A API key is what you need to get by registering inorder to access these things. You need to put it into the code to activate it. You need to register for the different 'programs'.

It depends on what API key you want from Google (e.g. Google Adsense API, Blogger Data API, Google Apps API, etc).
You have to select the API key you want and create a Google account.
