Google lets you put sitemaps up for any number of sites.

As a website developer will my clients be penalised if I manage that part of the process for them?
I'm kinda thinking that maybe Google thinks that people can only run so many things and if you have all of these then maybe you're a spammer.
If a site owner does something wrong and gets their site banned will that taint the other sites whose sitemaps sit along side the banned site? Even though the only common element is the original submitter?

Raises new questions but it's a great initiative from Google.

A site map will only work in the folder it is stored. You can't centrally locate them. They won't work if on one domain pointing to another.

If I understood you correctly.

I was more thinking about the page at https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/stats where you can submit any number of sitemaps.

But I need to check up on the folder thing. with mod_rewrite the folders thing doesn't really work. I'm planning to put them in root and do the whole site.

I'm wondering that myself, Since i'm starting creating lost of datafeed websites that also generates a google sitemap. I guess there's no real answer to the question for now.

Have you thought about directly emailing google and asking?

Lets see what they say on the newsgroup.

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/google-sitemaps/browse_thread/thread/10377010cfb63268/c01e053fbc3d8e82

I get the feeling it's endorsed and supported by Google themselves.
