The coop is awesome, and IMO is a primary part of an overall strategy.
Another great tool is Link Vault - which gives static links to balance the coop's rotating links.
My question is, after spending years building links one at a time, what other methods (e.g. Arelis link marketing software) do members recommend for building links more efficiently?
And, is there a place where webmasters who run 10, 20 or 100 sites can trade links on a indirect reciprocal basis (A to B, B to C) -- particularly trustworthy webmasters who will keep the links up, and sites that are PR3-7?

You might want to try LinkWorth.com. It's a pay-per-link site, but worth mentioning. The links are indexable and are great way to build quality, relevant incoming links to your site. I've been using them for the past few weeks and I've enjoyed the relevant links, placement and increased traffic.

I just signed up for gotlinks.com (http://www.gotlinks.com) Not sure about the results yet - it's too soon to tell. They claim to get you 900 static links. We'll see what happens in the next google update.

I agree with Ian, the best way to compliment Coop links is with natural links gained through old school methods. By far this is the majority of my links and I also believe its those that deliver the bulk of my rankings.
Shortcuts are OK if they are easy and you can take the level of risk, but nothing beats the old fashioned methods.

Does anyone know who the folks behind the link vault are and what circles they may travel in and other web sites they manage?

I have found them to be of no help. Basically you have to link to the person you are proposing the trade with first. This means every Casino site around is linking to you the moment you sign up and then sending you emails asking when their link will be up. At least with Link Market you can block them BEFORE they start linking to you.
Plus Link Metro doesn't support 3 way links which is a major negative in my view.
I obviously wasn't too impressed with them as they are basically a low market Link Market.

I've got LinkVault (http://www.link-vault.com/?ss=1157) running on one of my secondary sites, and so far I'm pretty impressed.. I just need some referrals so I can access the rest of the features. :(
