Has anybody heard of an algorithm to retrive the Alexa Rank of a page? Screenscraping is one option, but that is always so bloated.

Officially you need to pay to make queries to Alexa, but check this:

Does this still work for anybody else? They might have started blocking my IP address.

Still works for me... figured it was only a matter of time, since that's specifically what they sell access to. ;)

I really don't get it. Why does anyone care about alexa? What am I missing here?

Not much. But people obsess about all kinds of crap on the Internet. We should start a list of useless crap that people obsess about.
Here is a starter list:
1. PR
2. PR bled
3. Keyword density
4. Alex rankings
5. Google PR/BL update
6. Exact time to the second of Google's caching of a page
7. Number of visitors your competitor gets

So Bob, am I OK not to be concerned about one of my sites having nearly 50% keyword density on some pages?
