Our site is about to undergo a massive redesign and we have a couple of niggly questions we aren't sure about.

What are the implications of changing from php. addresses to shorthand addresses, for example -

http://www.vinopolis.co.uk/corporateevents.php

to

http://www.vinopolis.co.uk/events

If you don't set up proper redirects, you will break any incoming links to those specific pages, and lose the PR associated with them.

But if you set up some 301s, it's a good idea

people out there, directories, forums, others linking to your site lose their links
hence you have to assure with a redirect that all old links automatically point to the new pages
think about that needed logic before deciding the new file names for pages
