Tiger Direct has filed suit against Apple Computer for using the codename "Tiger" on their new operating system which comes out tomorrow...
http://www.macnn.com/articles/05/04/28/apple.sued.over.tiger/
The company says that Apple's use of Tiger has changed internet search results, directly impacting its ability to market product to its customers. The company alleges that Apple's use of the name has adversely affected its ranking among the internet's largest search engines, Google and Yahoo, bumping the company from its usual spot in the first three results.
Apparently they think they are legally entitled to search engine rankings for the word "Tiger". haha

Tiger's claim seems silly, but what would Apple's reaction be if any company remotely linked to computers used Apple in their name?

Forget him, it's the poor bengal Tigers Im worried about. I doubt they have legal representation.
On topic. They have NO chance, My guess is they know it and are relying on the free PR -Just like this thread :D

I doubt filing a silly suit is 'free'.

Its extraordinary how these days search engines play a part in making or breaking a company, they wont win (no leg to stand on, right?)

Nah they won't win, but you know what they say about "bad press" If it earns them more customers then they money the spend fighting, it could be beneficial for them. If it were me, I would definately spend 1 million to make 10 or raise my sales by a percent or two. While a meaningless lawsuit, it could mean big bucks for Tiger Direct in the long run.

yeh as long as they find a judge to let the case into the court room ... they have some headlines.

It is all about press and that's what they'll get. If it were a real claim they should have said something earlier. I mean, how long have we known the name Tiger for 10.4? Over a year?! They'll get free press, however their Mac customers may sharply drop off.
Oh and if they did stop Tiger from selling tonight, their company would be hurting from angry angry Mac geeks, I mean fans. ;)

I read a story somewhere on the net where Tiger Direct sued some guy in china who had a domain name or something like that. The domain was something like tigerelectronics.com or close to that. Seems the guys actual name is tiger and he had/has an electronics business of sorts about 20 years.
Tiger Direct sued him. I have been trying to find the story but haven't seen it anywhere.
Can anyone help?
Edited to add this: I looked up tigerelectronics.com and found the site is run by Hasbro inc. I then did a search for "tiger direct" + tigerelectronics.com and found zero search results. Why would tiger direct sue apple and not sue hasbro???
